hooray to see more oils! Glad to see you could find the williamsburg. A note on the linseed oil, I've seen James Wappel mix the oil with interference powders to create his own unique oil paints, or with fluorescent powders that can be found on etsy to create his own unique oil paints. Also, with the idea of not wanting to do a wash, consider priming a light color, then using a dark color thinned about how you have your oil glazes as shown in the video and go over the entire model. Then wipe away on the raised areas. It can create a grisaille and the oil paint in the recesses is still active and can blend in with your other colors. Keep up the great work!

James Wappel is my oil painting inspiration man. I really need to give him a quick shout out for my next oil painting video. Thanks for the tip man! 😊🎨🎨🎨

@@DonSuratos I'm just very happy to see you and a few more people showing oils in use to expand mini painting. It's always fun to see how each person uses them a little different. The work you've done with them looks great!

You should try putting your oils on cardboard first for 45 minutes to an hour first. Once that linseed oil bleeds out it makes them more flat and they dry 3-4 times as fast! It’s definitely worth a try.

I did. I hate it. The oils are sooo… hmmm… dry. Not a fan. 😉

@@DonSuratos oh wow, that’s crazy! They definitely are drier than normal but I find it takes very little gamsol to get it to go on smooth. I actually do 100% of my weathering and effects with oils (oil paint rendering technique taught by Mike Rinaldi) on my models, so either way I love to see people using oils!

I do this as well, and like Don, I also find the paints are too dry to really use and blend well. So I after I transfer the oils to the glass palette, I add some Gamblin Medium to them to help bring the flow back (you can use any good alkyd-based medium for this as well). The medium has the same consistency as the linseed oil it's replacing, and the alkyd speeds drying. I find can paint the face of a bust or figure one day, and it will be dry and ready for another layer the next. I haven't used Gamsol for thinning -- I just use odorless mineral spirits (which aren't really odorless, but that's a different issue).

@@khanoclast interesting because I’ve been wondering about using mediums! I’m going to grab me a bottle a try it out.

Some artists I know recommend to seal oils with acrylic varnish. They say after varnish dries, it create protective film for oil to dry up, and oils dry under that film while you can paint over with next layer of oil or acrylics. Have you tried that approach?
@DonSuratos Жыл бұрын
Yes. But I allow at least overnight of drying time before sealing with a varnish.

I'm working on kill team octarius orks right now so this couldn't of come at a better time. I'm still scraping mold lines so it'll be a while lol

Haha! Yes those have a ton of nasty mold lines! 😅

I'm big on oil washes, but I really should take up trying oil paints proper on my minis. In fact? I wonder if it will help with my ongoing Giger Cryx project? One way to find out!

Oils elevates your painting man. However acrylics and oils is a more efficient combination. 😊🎨🎨🎨

you are late to the YT mini painter oil hype ^^. a recent survey showed that 90% of mini painters arent interested in using oil paint when it comes to mini painting, but i think its worth the experiance

I am late in anything miniature painting man. I just took miniature painting serious less than a couple of years ago. 😅
