Oh, babe, been doing it for decades. Just make sure you seal off edges with shellac based primer first to avoid edges rolling up. Water-based paints will dis-adhere the edges if you don't.

I have used Loctite water resistant superglue for seam repair. Gripper acrylic primer with good results in 3 houses. Zinsser 123 is easier to obtain so I will try it. So thankful to be able to paint over wallpaper in this current house to prep for sale. However if I can help it I will not purchase another house with wallpaper. It has really set me back in time and other resources. In a few years we may get an RV that will require painting wallpaper as they are all so dated. If you paint them light colors inside they sell fast. Same with houses. Thank you for your help. Good video.

Many years ago I painted over wallpaper that had a slight embossed pattern. What was nice was that the same gentle lines below became a part of the paint pattern, making the paint look more like a re-paper job instead of paint. ........... Now for our friend the U. Handyman -- with different terminology on each side of the Atlantic Pond, what in the world is "sugar soap' ? We would use something with good emulsion if surface has any cooking grease or dust. Was also hoping you might say something about lighter brush strokes, dry brush or other techniques in the painting over wallpaper. Guess your intention was to simply cover the wallpaper well and be done.
@ultimatehandyman3 жыл бұрын
Sugar soap is a product made from soap and sugar, which is used in the UK to clean, before painting. Not sure what they call it in the states! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_soap You only need light brush strokes, using a decent brush around the edges to "cut in", then a decent roller for the large areas. I have removed wall paper in a small bathroom and it took me and my wife 2 entire days. It was a terrible experience and when it was time to paint we had to spend more money to get the glue off that we could not see. Then a year later we painted over our wall papered living room and we have bubbles where the paper has turned loose and an area wear there are alot of small streaks. If I had followed all of the above suggestions it would have fixed the problems. It seems that 75% of the painted over living room is just fine because the original install of the paper was good and the wall paper was still smooth and stuck perfectly. I am considering this time covering over the walls with either paneling, 1/4" sheetrock/sand seams or wood flooring. I have wood flooring that looks like tile on one wall and it looks great and I have a pecan wood flooring half way up the wall up to the chair rail. Covering over the wallpaper cost the same as painting if I do all the work myself and it looked better. Painting took 3 times longer than installing wood flooring over the wallpaper. The laminate flooring that cost $3.00 a sq. ft. I could install myself and it stayed together better because it was 1 inch thick. The cheap .70 sq. ft laminate flooring does not want to stay clicked together on long runs. The other product of flooring I have used on the walls were the 18" x 18" square black rubber glued back stick tiles. The wallpaper was what I used in my first house when I was 25 years old. I hated wallpaper after that and I have installed the products above on walls. They are alot less trouble than wallpaper.

Hello ultimate handyman. OK so we have a 3200 square-foot home recently repainted, several rooms where the wallpaper was painted over. I've just come across this video and noticed there are several products used. What I want to know is what do I do when I come across seams that have lifted away from the wall and also where you see vertical ridges? Which products do I use at this point after it's been painted and setting for a couple of months to then cover those up again and make the wall smooth? Thanks so much!
@ultimatehandyman2 жыл бұрын
Wallpaper coverup, will only enable the paper to be painted, it does nothing to smooth out the paper. For lifting seams, I would stick them back down using border adhesive and then use a seam roller. Once the adhesive is dried, you can then start to paint over the top 👍

Great video bloke! How does the wall paper cover up paint differ from regular wall paint? Ps. The audio on the video seemed to be of lesser quality than your usual tutorials.
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
The cover-up is formulated so it won't make the wallpaper bubble or blister (which can happen with some paints on wallpaper), it also contains a stain blocker. I had to narrate over this video, which is much more difficult than recording the audio as I go along- hence the poor quality. Thanks for the comment

@@ultimatehandyman thank you for the info. To be clear, what you mean by the 'cover up' is the primer? Or would one need to use that specific primer and then another specific paint to avoid bubbling? Thank you so much for this brilliant video, I followed your method and painted over 2 bedrooms with a green coloured textured wall paper with 1 coat of Zinsser Wallpaper Cover Up, 2 coats of contract brilliant white silk from Wicks. Really reallyu pleased with the finish. 1 quick question for next time, when cleaning with sugar soap and water, should I wait for it to dry before cleaning off with a damp cloth/sponge?
@ultimatehandyman3 жыл бұрын
Sugar soap is not the best, as it can leave deposits behind that interfere with paint adhesion. But as long as it is cleaned off properly, it should be fine. I'd just wipe it off when it's damp, but keep cleaning out the rag and change the cleaning water regularly 👍

I would not steam the paper, as you will ruin it. You could try carefully removing the paper, then fixing the damage but you might end up replacing the wall paper!

When mixing that can of paint with a drill, I noticed the paint was Zinsser B.I.N. I'm just wondering why you didn't mention it, as it's my favourite paint for covering surfaces like wallpaper.
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
I just wanted to demonstrate how to use a mixer paddle, I could not find the footage of me mixing the 123, although it is on my computer somewhere. Thanks for the comment
@KendalSmithy6 жыл бұрын
Ah fair enough. What do you think of B.I.N. though? Is it as good as 123 as a primer or is it more of a stain blocker?
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
It depends what I'm doing. I often use Zinsser coverstain for blocking stains or painting over stained varnish etc. B.I.N is great for priming some substrates. I have a small book called the pocket guide to surface priming and decoration by Zinsser and that tells you the best product to use for each scenario. I also have the Zinsser App on my phone which is great as you can search for substrates. I have a few of the pocket guides, if you want one if you send me a message via KZbin, I'll pop one in the post for you when I get chance ;-)

Thanks for the video. I currently rent a house that has wallpaper painted over. Unfortunately my cat has scratched some areas of the wall where the wallpaper was not fully flat, ripping off layers of material. I do not know where to go from here to try to repair these small areas. Can you give any advice on how I'd go about fixing this?
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
There is not much you can do, unless you can get some more paper and replace the damaged areas. Or if it is not too bad, perhaps you could fill the damage with some filler, then sand it and paint over the lot. Thanks for the comment

Thanks so much for this helpful video and answering back to so many of the comments people leave. Do I still need to prime the wallpaper when it seems like the wallpaper has previously been painted successfully (possibly with primer at that time)? Thanks

Great video as usual. As an amateur, I'd never heard of Zinsser 123. Any idea if it would it be suitable for using on my daughter's bedroom where she has left 'oily-looking' blu-tac marks on the walls from her posters, or will the marks just wash off with sugar soap?
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
I doubt if the marks will clean off, although you could try Zinsser universal degreaser and cleaner, if that does not work a coat of Zinsser 123 should sort it, as you can use that to paint over crayon etc. Thanks for the comment

Just moved into a bungalow and every wall is covered in a hessian type wallpaper and painted very dark colours, nightmare! How do I calculate how much wallpaper cover up I’ll need per room please
@ultimatehandyman3 жыл бұрын
It covers 5 - 8m2 per Litre So if you measure the height and width each wall in metres and multiply the two figures, that should tell you how many square metres it is, you can then work out how many tins you would need. You can get online calculators, but I'm not sure how accurate they are- www.smartcoat.com/tips-tricks

It depends, in some circumstances applying water based emulsion can cause the paper to bubble/lift. If you just use the emulsion you might have to do remedial work afterwards if it does bubble etc.

As long as the wallpaper has been applied correctly in the first place the seams are not an issue when they are painted over. But if the seams are overlapping or there are gaps this product will not hide them. Thanks for the comment 👍

I'd have to disagree with you on that one, there were two large bedrooms and the hall, stairs and landing that were all painted over. If you had to strip all those walls it would have added days or weeks to the job, then some of the walls would probably need re-plastering as the house is over 100 years old. Thanks for the comment

What the hell is sugarsalt on water ?? I notice that when you are done with the primer that there is still the wallpaper pattern showing through. Is that OK? I would think another coat of primer would be called for, but then again you first coat of paint seems to cover it up well. What is the rule on that? Nice video, as usual.
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
Sugarsoap and water, it's a cleaning soap/sugar solution that is often used prior to decorating. It comes as a powder and you mix it with water, then clean the surface with it. I tend to use Zinsser universal degreaser instead of sugar soap, but I didn't want to mention another Zinsser product in the video as it was sounding like a Zinsser commercial LOL. Thanks for the comment
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
It's fine that the paper can still be seen through the primer, it's job is to seal the wallpaper. You could apply two coats of the primer, but it is more expensive than the emulsion paint (or the Perma-white) so best to give it two top coats of paint. Thanks for the comment
@junecorriette66516 жыл бұрын
If you can't get or can't afford the paint in this video. Are there alternative. Do you have to sand the wallpaper. If not are they any circumstances where you have to
@ultimatehandyman6 жыл бұрын
I would never sand the wallpaper. I have seen people paint over some wallpapers, using just emulsion paint but it can make the wallpaper bubble, sometimes it also takes several coats to cover the wallpaper.

@ultimatehandyman5 жыл бұрын
If the wallpaper is just loose, you can paste it back using border adhesive, then paint the lot using the wallpaper coverup, then apply a top coat. If bits of the paper are actually missing, it might be best to remove it all completely. Thanks for the comment
