How to Paint Skabbik's Plaguepack | Warhammer Underworlds | Skaven

Hey all!
I couldn't resist painting up these cute skaven plague rats from Warhammer Underworlds Wyrdholllow :D Lately, I have been experimenting with using Contrast Paints as nice and saturated undercoats, and then following up with normal acrylics to highlight them up to a display ready standard. These disgusting little critters seemed like a perfect candidate for this technique/approach. I hope you guys enjoy the tutorial and maybe walk away with a couple of ideas you can use in your own projects 😉

Im a 40k collector/player but adore skaven!! Some of my first minis were skaven purchacad in 1989. Im so bored of painting Imperial Guard and brought a plague monk and storm vermin kit just for fun. I could never paint to this level but - they look amazing!!

I love 40k lore and the models are great. But, AoS models are just too good lately. So I know exactly what you mean :) Plus, there is just something about skaven, they are pure fun as a faction and as models to paint.

@@ph3lansminiatures I may be wrong, but from all the Old World factions, Skaven seem the only original concept?! The various dwarfs, human races (norse, empires, bretonian) ogers, elves of various sorts, orks. Goblins, undead etc are fairly generic...but mutated rats with firearms, plague furnaces firearms and warpstone technology is on a different level!! The variety of Chaos one can turn to is quite uniquel too I supose 😆 🤣. I brought myself an old Advanced Heroquest copy a while ago and slowly tyring to aquire all the skaven and other oldhamner models it featured - but it's a very slow project

I always at least do an oil wash over a contrast. I only recently started using acrylics over oils or doing stuff like glazing, but I have to say they’re now my favorite part of painting.

I just started my skaven army in prep for a possible refresh this summer. Started with my deathmaster and did NMM so I was worried about having to do nmm on clanrat-level dudes. Then your process comes along and helps define the 'fast nmm' that I can do for regular line troops.

I only have about a eight contrast paints, but my experience with it is that it seems to look best on fantasy type miniatures when speedpainting, something a little more grimdark. Ragged cloth looks very natural with it. Just isn't my ideal choice when painting armor or other more smooth surfaces. Looks really good on the plague rats, the pop of the highlights are worth the extra effort.

Yeah, contrast type paints work best on detailed, busy surfaces. For example, they are ideal for fur or scales. They don't do well on less detailed surfaces like big armor panels. The nice thing about them is that you can use them for so much more than just as contrast paints :D they are great for filters if you want to increase the vibrancy of something and they can work as shades as well, replacing washes. For example, guilliman flesh works great as a wash for true metallic gold. The more I use them, the more applications I find for them 😀

@ph3Iansminiatures I like your approach 😊 it saves time? What do you think of the result compared with layering and blending? And what do you think is the ""best"" contrast/speed paint to work with? I haven't painted for a longgg time now. When I started painting I just did base-} drybtush a highlight-} wash and then perhaps a last highlight(drybrush).

@markdekker2399 Welcome to the channel and back to the hobby :) Using contrast is definitely faster than normal layering and blending. It is also way easier to do, as long as you understand a couple of basic things. Highlighting it the way I did it here takes the same time, though :D Up until recently, I used only Citadel Contrast paints, and I can absolutely recommend them. A couple of weeks ago, I got my Vallejo Xpress color set, and I have started experimenting with it. So far, I like those paints quite a bit as well, but I will need some time to figure out if I like them more than Citadel. So for now, my advice is to get Citadel and branch out later if you feel like it.

Looks absolutely beautiful mate. Could I ask what size brush you use for your highlighting? I am struggling using a size two for fine lines

Hey there! I usually use sizes between 2 and 00, but the Rosemary & Co brushes are larger sizes than some other brands, so it is hard to compare them in my experience :( in general you can paint even fine dateals with a large brush, if it is sharp/pointy enough.

Would be great if we could compare this with how long it would have taken you if you had painted traditionally so we can see the full spectrum of the trade between quality and speed

To be honest, the idea here was mostly quality and not speed. I used the contrast as an undercoat for its vibrancy and saturation and because, on top of the zenithal, it creates transitions automatically. It is still faster than normal paints since recreating the transitions on top of the basecoat would take some time, but it is not drastically faster.

Yep I just figured it would be interesting if there's a video focused on quality vs speed and the spectrum within along with expected time per model based on the ranging approaches but that's just me. I'm still early in my painting journey and am constantly torn between quality & speed as I want to not have grey on the table as much as possible

@adityam7866 That sounds quite familiar to most painters, including myself, I think 😀 No matter how good you are, there is always some struggle between painting fast or painting for quality. I have a couple of videos on the channel where I focused on speed rather than quality ( usually the title or thumbnail say speedpainting), so maybe check them out. At the moment, I feel that a good balance for me is 1 hour per model when I am going for something fast but still nice looking. Basically, I'm painting a squad of 5 in that many hours.

The paintjob is incredible... i try to do the same with the plaguebearer flesh but... i dont know why... it never looks that good just this one paint fucked it up totaly... shaked it like a maniac and 2 coats... dont know whats wrong
