Hullo Emma, Thanks for another wonderful jam packed video! So many techniques and encouragement for going forward with soft pastels! I remember a video when you dropped a stick and you sighed and said well there is my next fine detail stick! Never throw away any piece of pastel, you can even turn small pieces into a new pastel stick and they can be used even in the smallest piece! I truly enjoy your work and marvel at the wide range of your subjects! Thank You!

Emma, this is great info. I got frustrated on a previous work because I couldn’t get the detail. I eventually decided to buy some pastel pencils to help this and they have. The issue I now have is overloading the paper. So I wholeheartedly understand your point about using the right paper and layering lightly (I was but the paper only took a small amount). Love your work and advice.

Rembrandt sticks are a very good medium soft pastel. I find they work so good blocking in big areas of color and setting the tone for my paintings. They also take up less "tooth" and leave more room for adding layers.

Exactly what @mjpete27 said! They are a little harder and sometimes it's nice to use a harder pastel in lower layers to not fill up the tooth right away.
