I got the rust and verdigris bottles about 3 weeks ago based on the sample pictures of them in use and they deliver. The way it builds up easily and allows you to create a gradient of thicker, darker rust or patina is just perfect. Makes me wish I had a nurgle or soulblight project on my desk right now, but that will be a couple months while I finish up my current minis. Would love to see a follow up with how (or if) you adjust your painting approach with how semi-permanent this is (really seems to need a varnish if you want to handle the miniature or apply additional water based paints above it). I’ve seen that you utilize different finishes to great effect (like your recent flesh tutorials), so a mandatory varnish step may necessitate some creative thinking to not lose all that! Also I really enjoyed how often the word “fuzzies” is used in a grimdark video. :D

Based on the solvent mix, spray acrylic varnish should leave it pretty well unmolested, though it will kill the textural differences. You could, were you so inclined, go back in and do a brush-on varnish pass to bring in that contrast in finishes, but I don't know how close you could feasibly reclaim, without a full line of brush-on varnishes, and a lot of patience.

So I've found, when using this paint, that if you mix it with water 1-to-1 for your first pass, then paint straight from the bottle over it, as the water evaporates through the layers it can give a more profound rust effect. Also, be super fucking careful when using heat to speed up the drying, I kinda maybe set my model just a little bit on fire, and it burns clear like race fuel so I didn't even notice at first.

Also for me personally I could see myself using the Dirty Down Rust Effect for HQ's and character specifics for more flare or grimness. I do have three questions if you don't mind: -What kind of setting you use for your hair dryer when you use it for drying? Is it on low heat, med, or high? -What do you call that chipping tool? Couldn't find it searching through google -Lastly I plan on signing up as a member, but was curious if there was a course or video on fur specific grim dark. I love the light yellow, in contrast to the darker tones, which may be achieved by applying thicker layers. Any follow up tip? Thanks, and cheers!
@samcarlson51562 жыл бұрын
The light yellow is acheived by adding additional water afterwards. I get more variation by using some Ryza Rust in a stippling pattern as a base to where I will eventually put the Dirty Down. The Grimdark Compendium video on the Lord Discordant gave me the idea. But for more yellow than brown, just go back to where you already have the dirty down and dab at it with a water wet paintbrush or q-tip! Let it dry between dabs until you get the desired effect.
