Not going to lie, you're my go-to guy for figuring out weathering and the grimdark...age to minis. Have you thought about doing a 'basic kit' for weathering? Like your most commonly used paints (like Streaking Grime, this Rust, etc.) and how/where to apply them?

I was wondering how long it would take for the dirty down products to hit KZbin painting channels. I got the rust and verdigris bottles about 3 weeks ago based on the sample pictures of them in use and they deliver. The way it builds up easily and allows you to create a gradient of thicker, darker rust or patina is just perfect. Makes me wish I had a nurgle or soulblight project on my desk right now, but that will be a couple months while I finish up my current minis. I got it shipped to me from a shop in the states called Goblin's Hut. After testing the 2 I got I wish I had just bought the 3 pack with the moss effect. Great video and terrific product.

Would love to see a follow up with how (or if) you adjust your painting approach with how semi-permanent this is (really seems to need a varnish if you want to handle the miniature or apply additional water based paints above it). I’ve seen that you utilize different finishes to great effect (like your recent flesh tutorials), so a mandatory varnish step may necessitate some creative thinking to not lose all that! Also I really enjoyed how often the word “fuzzies” is used in a grimdark video. :D

Based on the solvent mix, spray acrylic varnish should leave it pretty well unmolested, though it will kill the textural differences. You could, were you so inclined, go back in and do a brush-on varnish pass to bring in that contrast in finishes, but I don't know how close you could feasibly reclaim, without a full line of brush-on varnishes, and a lot of patience.

@samcarlson5156
@samcarlson5156 Жыл бұрын
The light yellow is acheived by adding additional water afterwards. I get more variation by using some Ryza Rust in a stippling pattern as a base to where I will eventually put the Dirty Down. The Grimdark Compendium video on the Lord Discordant gave me the idea. But for more yellow than brown, just go back to where you already have the dirty down and dab at it with a water wet paintbrush or q-tip! Let it dry between dabs until you get the desired effect.

So I've found, when using this paint, that if you mix it with water 1-to-1 for your first pass, then paint straight from the bottle over it, as the water evaporates through the layers it can give a more profound rust effect. Also, be super fucking careful when using heat to speed up the drying, I kinda maybe set my model just a little bit on fire, and it burns clear like race fuel so I didn't even notice at first.

When applying oils via a brush you said in one of your videos thin till translucent How does that look on the pallet I’m still fairly new to oils, and when applying the 2nd coat how long would you wait ? Sense we are blending I wouldn’t say too long.

I would need to know the application you were referring to, to be able to tell you the proper thinning. I.e wash, blending layer, detail, scrubbed base coat?

Don’t you need to varnish after chipping off the paint? Especially because of using the a qtip to remove the wash later

Optionally, yes. It is not necessary, however.

These look awesome. But hey are so expensive to get here in the Netherlands. How do they compare to Greenstuff World Liquid pigments. They have some rust as well

Can anyone tell me if this is a custom model or where it came from? It's quite amazing and I need one for my wolves

Just got some of this stuff. If water continually reactivates it, do you know how it performs when you use the water based varnishes? Awesome job showing the product. Thanks.

I wouldn't varnish it.

I've used what I believe is the precursor to this stuff (it seems like it's very similar, just a different brand name), and varnish didn't negatively effect it.

Great mini man! Recently saw that Valbjorn is apart of the Grimdark Compendium now. Zatcaskagoon and Valbjorn you guys are both amazing, love your guys work really inspiring! The paint job on Logan has a really nice in-between of Horus Hersey and current Space Wolves. Also for me personally I could see myself using the Dirty Down Rust Effect for HQ's and character specifics for more flare or grimness. I do have three questions if you don't mind: -What kind of setting you use for your hair dryer when you use it for drying? Is it on low heat, med, or high? -What do you call that chipping tool? Couldn't find it searching through google -Lastly I plan on signing up as a member, but was curious if there was a course or video on fur specific grim dark. As a Space Wolves player I wanted to know how you would go about a fur specific model like Fenrisan or Cyber Wolves. Would you simply just paint desired fur colors then apply dark brown wash?

Think the hair dryer is essential to get the effect?

Saw this, luckily I'm in the uk, brought 2 bottles. How would you use this in your black legion recipe? Thanks A quick update, I ordered a couple bottles from ebay and the seller said they had noticed a significant rush for this product

Haha. Nice. I would use the rust after the rust streaks step. That process acheives a coloration and texture more than a rust effect.
