@@HeatherCashArt I just received an an acrylic paint set for Christmas and I am a beginner. The canvas is outlined and I have five .2 oz tubes of paint. What do I squeeze the paint out on? Will a paper plate work? Do I need to go over the entire canvass with water first?
@HeatherCashArt4 жыл бұрын
@@robinheuver1915 OMG! I'm so sorry, I just saw this! I like to use a foam plate because then I can just throw it away when I'm done! Or you can use a ceramic plate but then you'd have to wash it after. You don't need to go over the canvas with water first - I never do that, unless I am doing a super large canvas and want my paint to go a little farther.
@ronward56984 жыл бұрын
Robin Heuver I can keep my acrylics from dying out for a week or more by squeezing it onto paper palettes designed to keep the paint moist. (I use stay-wet palettes) You have to keep the paint/paper in an airtight container with a wet sponge. (They sell a whole system but I just make my own) and don’t keep it for too long as the sponge will get moldy

Also, try experimenting with the amount of water in the paint. I can get pretty thin lines with inky consistency to the paint, (albeit at the cost of opacity sometimes) but it’s still the best approach for my particular style. Also, thinned our paint is good for filling in those areas that have unclean edges because you add more water to the dryer paint and it lays down better.
@annansubuga83074 жыл бұрын
Using alot of water weakens the paint film so tht the paint doesn't bond properly meaning it'll age poorly , I recommend buying an acrylic gloss medium to replace the water! Also makes layering easier too

Another good tool for slim lines is a 'rigger's brush', which the brush in this video is approaching lengthwise. The rigger's brush is so called because painters used to use it for painting rigging in paintings of ships. As the bristles are so long, they don't transmit the natural shake of your hand to the tip of the brush, so you end up with a smoother line. I have also found that mixing the paint with a little flow enhancer helps a lot as it thins down the paint, making it smoother to apply. Just ask at your craft store where they will probably sell it. The advantage over water is that flow enhancer does not reduce the opacity as much as water. Water will also dilute the polymer particles in acrylic paint which means that they do not bond properly - this will result in a weakened paint surface and possible deterioration of your painting over time.

If I’m painting a house (lots of straight lines) would you ever use a ruler to guide you? My free hand lines are not as straight as yours.
@HeatherCashArt5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would probably draw them out with a ruler and pencil lightly, and then go over with paint, without the ruler. I wouldn't try to get them absolutely perfect - after all, it is being hand-painted - so I think that would work well. Don't get too hung up on trying to make it perfect! 🙂

This was very helpful, thank you! I do wish you had mentioned how/if the paint's consistency should be modified, sometimes. I'm new to acrylics and find that some paints are rather thick out of the tube. What would be the ideal consistency for drawing lines?
@HeatherCashArt2 жыл бұрын
Hi! When you make your line, if you get the dots of canvas showing through, then wet your brush and try again. The water in your brush will help thin it out a bit. You do have to keep experimenting and just do it a lot so you get a feel for it. Eventually it will become second nature. Does that help? So basically if you get the dots of canvas showing through, your paint is too dry/thick and get your brush wet to thin it out a bit.

Not every time, maybe like every 3 time or so. But be sure to dry your brush a bit on the paper towel too. In order to make the lines thinner, try to make sure you're holding the brush very perpendicular to the canvas, and also going very lightly with the brush. Hope that helps!

Hi Sandra, you can try thinning your paint down and using a brush even thinner than the one I use in the video. But basically the same principles still apply - the way you hold the brush, the thickness of the paint, etc.
