It's a tricky one for sure, generally I think you have to pick some lighting source, or just be very sparing with the middle stages, jumping fast to edges/final steps, you can also wash down your results to 'pull them back'.

That would be cool... and tricky, we're looking as some pre-shading techniques where you do the entire model in black and white, and then glaze after, inspired by airbrushing. @ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 4 жыл бұрын
It's actually the only downside of the technique, well guessed! The best approach is the first couple of steps all over, and then do 1-2 steps in 'zones' over the model, you don't get the same satisfaction per zone, but it's better for consistency!

Looks good, gonna try to use that with my Scar successors. Also appreciate that you use only a brush, most painting tutorials are for airbrushing only. My basecoat is zandri dust currently, would you recommend mixing that with rakarth flesh to do a panel drybrush over that and than a pure rakarth flesh drybrush to bring more life to panels that way? (it's for a Repulsor btw)
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 4 жыл бұрын
Hey JW... Mhhmm, I would actually do some work with shading in this situation, or work from a slightly darker basecoat, and just go wit hthe rakarth, it is such a strong lovely colour, and then transition that into white. Ironically, given your comment, I've done this scheme a lot years back with airbrushing, then drybrushing to finish! (scroll down a little) elementgames.co.uk/gallery/byron/necrons

@@ArtisOpus would adding a dark wash, then stipple Rakarth mixed with Zandri help in some way if I then do a stipple with Rakarth in addition with Highlights? Also, if yes which? Loving this work once again! Any advice for how you maintain colour consistency with the mixed colours for the blends across the different panels (top and other side for example) or other vehicles? Is it just constant referencing? Thanks in advance!
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the support dude! Great question! It can be tricky, one way to combat this is to do each step all over the vehicle (take your time). It is easier for video tutorials to do only one panel, but I can really recommend you take this approach😊

So how do you decide or figure out where to put the highlight "blobs" so to speak? What's the thought and decision making process behind that? I know that people using airbrushes tend to do the same sort of highlighting but as someone who's never even looked at an airbrush let alone used one, the actual reasoning and process can be left behind as to why the paint is being put where from the get go. I'd like to ask this because understanding why is just as, if not more important than understanding how, when learning something new and if I were to go about for example, doing the top portion of the ship, I'd be a little lost going about it. That's not to say there's anything wrong with this video, because there's not. I'm just asking from the viewpoint of the beginner I am

No worries dude, in this case they're in the centres of panels, we've got a necron tutorial coming out very soon which'll demonstrate this more clearly, it's one of the most easy ways though. Think of it as the flat opposite of edge-highlighting. Another way is to concentrate on the upper sections of each panel, to mimmick lighting.
