It’s fun for me that people need an intro on gouache. In France, gouache is what you use as kids during art class. Because it’s so versatile and because you don’t really waste anything. If you pulled too much paint out of the tube you juste let it dry and you reactivate it with water at the next class. If you go to France go to any supermarket and you will find a cheap pack of gouache in the school supply aisle.

*You can add white gouache, (titanium,) to any watercolor to "make gouache" in a pinch. It's more convenient when done in a little ceramic dish.

@B1ackDahlia7674 жыл бұрын
@@lisamccort6777 of course! You're kindly welcome! I'm mainly a draftsman, but I adore watercolor & gouache. Here are a few things I wish I'd known to begin with, product-wise, in case it might be of use to you: I've heard "Marie's" gouache to be a great starter gouache, and it's supposedly pretty affordable. (I prefer Holbein, but it's extremely expensive!) Holbein, Winsor and Newton, M. Graham, & DaVinci offer giant tubes of titanium white gouache. I'd go for a large tube of W&N titanium white to start as you'll end up using it most, especially if you're mixing watercolor into it to create colored gouaches. It's a great trick, but it's not perfect. (I recommend titanium white/permanent white over a flake white or any other as it's not a 'warm' white.) I've personally tried the gouache made by Arteza, & it's not only affordable, but it is a great student grade gouache to start with. I use it all the time and save my Holbein for commissions, etc. As far as paper goes, I like to practice using the Canson XL watercolor paper rather than on pricey cotton, (again, I try to reserve the cotton for client pieces,) use synthetic brushes that are normally for acrylics rather than softer watercolor brushes, (because gouache is a bit of a heavier paint,) but that's all personal preference. I can say that Canson XL paper is a good choice economically speaking, as are the cheap synthetics. Above all, have FUN! 😉 *EDIT: Always bring your watercolor paint to your gouache, & never bring your gouache into your watercolor palette to avoid contaminating your watercolor palette with the opaque paint! ;)

I have been an advanced watercolor artist for years and came across a project where acrylic paint was needed. I used acrylic in the past and I have been successful but it is a challenge. This time used gouache because its closer to watercolor in the sense of how it feels and going back to blend if needed. This video did help a lot with learning the first few things before I practice for the piece that was being made.

Thanks for the tips! I have a couple of questions: 1. What does it mean to "work out of the tube?" and 2. Will those of us in a dry climate run into trouble with it drying before we can complete a project?
@LetsMakeArt4 жыл бұрын
1. Working out of the tube means you put paint straight from the tube onto your palette and immediately start using it (opposed to squirting paint from a tube onto your palette and letting it dry before you start to paint with it ) 2. Gouache does dry fairly quickly in general so it is possible it will affect it, if it does then maybe keep a spray bottle on hand so you can mist your work and keep it moist if you want

@Lynda Gunderson Yes, it can. You can easily tint white gouache any color you like . However, you need to be careful not to contaminate your traditional watercolors by dipping back and forth between the white gouache and the color in your pan or palette. I always use a separate water jar for rinsing just the white.
