Thanks again Rich! The first coat especially with metallic paints, is the most important. (opposite on a real car). It sets the the metallic flakes to a uniform consistancy and eliminates what can be patchy shades of dark and light. It is where you can get a more consistent finish with the metallic paints. Think of the tiny aluminum partictal and how they react to the heaviness of your coats. Wet coats flood the metallic particles and tend to be darker, less sparkle and can give you a mottelled or patchy paint finish. The flake is laying flat and is drowned by colour. A light dusting, for the first coat, I get out the better halfs hairdryer & make sure it's dry, then my next 2 coats would be getting heavier with each coat, then your back up paint to finish. The best part is you don't have to be careful with top coats of clear which can effect that last coat of metallic flakes on a real car. My advice, first coat should almost be a dusting of paint & dry before you apply more paint. All the surfaces should look the same and as you pointed out, try to cover all the nooks & crannies and even give areas you know are going to wear through an extra coat. Cheers Garszy

Thank you for explaining how to use as I normally use tamiya paints & warm the paint up in cold temperatures but I've experienced with pactra in the past & with its (window tint black & flouresnt red & flouresnt green) I find pactra paints oily were as in tamiya paints are matt. When spraying coats. But seeing how different backers/base coat changes the affect really makes a difference. Thank you for showing as I'm in middle of spraying a matrix Mercedes C25 body in pactra candy purple.
@chicagotom20067 жыл бұрын
Nice job. I'm a rattle can painter too. I add 3 more prep steps. First I scuff the inside of the body except the windows with Scotch brite pad, then I wash and dry again and put the body out in the sun for a couple of hours to heat it up. Then just before spraying I run hot water over the can of paint to also warm it up. This allows the paint to come out in a nice even pattern. Now I have a lexan body that will never chip off it's paint. Ever try painting with chrome paint? Tricky, tricky but sooo cool when done. Keep your fine work here.
@TheRCNetwork7 жыл бұрын
Good tips, Tom.....I've never scuffed the inside, but have heard that. I've never had any pactra paint flake or peel either - and yes, chrome paint is cool....I've used Spaz Stix Ulitmate mirror chrome - super easy to spray

Hey rich, I'm having the issue of when I paint the first base coat, blue, then I back it with with a white, it does not change color, I do about 6 coats for the base, then 2 for the backing, are you supposed to lightly paint the blue on so it's a bit transparent?
@TheRCNetwork7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it might be too many coats of the blue. It should still be transparent - I would only do 2-3 coats of the blue

My question is when you spray the body do you always have to spray the black for the final touch to make it dark or is that just for that color for an example I seen you spray a raptor body two-tone color like a blue and black with the white stripe I like that I just want to know after I'm done painting the body do I spray it with a black coat just to make it pop
@TheRCNetwork5 ай бұрын
If you goto that other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6O5nIKrh8eoqas at 4:41, I go over what it looks like if you use different color backers on that metallic blue. Typically, if you use black, it will deepen/darken the color, silver and white will lighten or make other colors like yellow or orange "pop"

@TheRCNetwork4 жыл бұрын
Yes, everything is done on the underside of the body - and some paints need a backer to reveal the true color like this metallic blue. The lighter the backer, the lighter the blue. Also, plan to do the black strip at the end with the backer

It's paint a test strip - you'll likely need a light shade of the red you choose, but not too may coats to get a deeper almost midnight red look

Would this have the same effect on a hard body such a Tamiya clodbuster body if the proper paint was used in reverse order? Such as a silver base coat followed by a metallic green followed by a clear coat?
@TheRCNetwork5 жыл бұрын
I doubt it...the Tamiya line of paints called "TS" is for hardbodies and is designed to make the color on the lid. "PS" (All the Pactra Paints) are for polycarbonate and use the clearness of the body to adjust the color depending on backing color

I do not have a clear body - that said, how might I be able to achieve this same colour or what other paints should I use to achieve it? I have a 1979 model of the Jeep Wrangler CJ5 from the show "Mork & Mindy", which appears to be very close to this same colour (darker, if anything) based on shots from the show - if this helps. Because this model/kit is notably rare and is a collectible, I really don't want to screw this up and I only want to invest in the best for it. Any suggestions from anyone would be much appreciated! (Note: I am in no considerable rush to make it, since I want to do careful, thorough research for my materials. Thus, late replies are welcome!)

Hey Rich, I’m about to mask and paint my proline body. The body has a sunroof window, but didn’t come with a mask for that can I use blue or frog painters tape for that?
@TheRCNetwork5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sure - I usually use that Pactra / Testors thin strips as it gives you a clean edge with no bleed through. Some masking tape allows the spray paint to bleed the edge

what makes RC model paint different than regular spray paint or even auto spray paint?
@TheRCNetwork4 жыл бұрын
RC bodies are very flexible, so the paint has to adhere with out peeling or cracking. There’s extra additives in polycarbonate paint to keep it looking good. If you tried using automotive paint, it would just all peel right out

How long do you wait to take the window mask off and how do you get it off without messing up the paint edge?
@TheRCNetwork6 жыл бұрын
I usually wait overnight - you want to make sure the paint is fully cured and not tacky, so it depends on the temperature. I start the window masks peeling by scraping with an exacting knife on the corner, the peel carefully

The RCNetwork Thanks
@luigynkaren0620117 жыл бұрын
Ben Cobb 5 mins is all you need if the sun is out, 15-20 mins is over kill as the first coat is lightly it almost dries within a minute, you actually need to wait 20 mins for the last coat as is the most wet coat because is more heavy, so at 20-30 mins is pretty much dried and ready to be handled, i wait atleast 45 mins though so it can cure more, sometimes an hour if I'm in no hurry. Also make sure to stay away from the wind as it can mess with your coats.

You'll have to experiment......pick your red, give it 2-3 coats and back it with Black. A black backer will darken the color. The less amount of red (2 coats) will make it appear more red/black, if that makes sense
