I was skeptical when I first started watching this. But now I wish I had done this when I started painting my terrain pieces.

This is amazing. I had weirdly never considered using oils on mine but it looks spot on. Great work!

I like how quickly you did this I’ll be keeping my eye on this series if you are doing a series on this.

Many thanks for this excellent tutorial. The technique looks dead simple but the result is good as gold. I'll definitely try it out.

I love doing stuff as simple as I can, sometimes people just go to far and make things over complicated. Glad it helped out.

Recommend using gloves when working with turpentines and spirits. Great tutorial otherwise, subscribed for more!

Lovely tutorial! Helped me tremendously with my ZM terrain! Just a quick question if you may: When it came to the removing of the oil paint for some reason it just straight up took of all the paint down to the plastic. I used AK interactive Mineral Spirit and did not put any preasure into the cotton swab // paper towerl. I used Vallejo (rattle can) primer which I let dry for more than a day. After putting on the basecoats I let the varnish dry also for another day and yet for some reason it still made an oopsie like this. The places where everything worked as intended are gorgeous but here and there are spots where I had to do some "cover" work.

Hi thanks for watching! 2 possibilities, what varnish did you use? I’ve used an airbrush varnish before and it did the same. I find that a gloss rattle can varnish works best. Also I know the AK mineral spirits are quite strong as I used to use them to clean my airbrush, so could also possibly be that. Apart from that I have no idea why that’s happening.

@@TabletopWarJames Thank you so much! Also I've been watching most of your other videos and I have to say: you are inspiring some of my layouts! They are just gorgeous! I used rattle can Vallejo gloss varnish. I started with one tile where I had these "oopsies" and left the other ones in the gloss varnish state (also I ran out of mineral spirit). I think I'll try another coat of varnish before I try the next tile.

@@TabletopWarJames Quick Update: So I tried the Abteilung 502 Oil Thinner and suprise: it worked like a charm. The paint layer was completely undamaged. Also gave it a shot on some Goliath Gangers (even without a varnish before) and also: no problem. My learning: the AK Interactive Mineral Spirit is really potent. Their Abteilung 502 line works much better (at least for me)

Is there a specific advantage to oils over acrylics in your opinion?
@TabletopWarJames2 жыл бұрын
If you did this with acrylic it would not work, oils are workable even a day or 2 after application. The simple answer is Acrylic acts more like a stain and won’t come off. Hope this answers the question

cool video, how did you get the wall topper so clean cut to use it as a cross beam?
@TabletopWarJames3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! Patients and a good razor saw 😉
@deebernaers1373 жыл бұрын
@@TabletopWarJames hehe, going to see if I can replicate that somehow - think sanding down the bottom of the topper might also work and using some plasticcard to make it sit flush.

Does the lacquer need to be gloss or can it be matt?
@TabletopWarJames2 жыл бұрын
Gloss is best as it allows more flow with the oils and cleans up easily. I do matt varnish it all once it’s finished.
@SebbStrife2 жыл бұрын
Awesome thank you. I just came to clarify my question as I saw you use matt at the end 😅 but you understood anyway. I’ll have to pop to Halfords for some gloss as I accidentally picked up matt last time. At least I have that now for the end phase. Do you paint any of the barrels and crates etc using similar methods? I’ve just got several stuck down onto my tiles and feel it’s be worth basecoating them prior to the gloss stage. What do you think?
@TabletopWarJames2 жыл бұрын
@@SebbStrife yeah just paint them in the colours you want and give them the same treatment😉
