How To Pan In A Mix

Thank you for another awesome tutorial and for doing something with African music...you are correct.its youruba music...the way you did the panning is pretty much the way I have heard it done on records...I don't think it has anything to do with stage arrangement because a talking drummer would almost always stand next to a drummer as they usually pay similar patterns during a break down...the other percussion instruments are also close to the drum.. sometimes they are arranged link an ensemble or marching band... as far as panning live, I have never heard any African percussion panned anywhere but center...but like I said, it's usually a different story on most records with these many percussions...if it was just a talking drum, it would almost always be panned center, like the kick drum as in 90 percent of all situations, it's like the lead guitar of most youruba centric music performances...it's so important to Western Nigerian music that some engineers might even make it louder than a drum set and nobody would complain about it (although thats also a big no no for a lot of us)...thank you for being so helpful to us in the music community

I'm sometimes using hardware synths which have wide stereo sounds. I've heard people say that in that case they'd just use the left channel so that it is mono in the mix to aid with panning. Sometimes though that loses some of the fullness of the sound so I've tried using something like Waves S1 to narrow the stereo image to aid panning but retain the power of the sound. Using your insight as to the hierarchy of importance makes thinking about those decisions easier. Thank you.

Sometimes a really wide synth is good though. I'm working on a record right now where I'm doing everything I can think of to make the lead synth as wide as possible.

To be nitpicky again: The common panning you layed out for orchestral string section corresponds to none of the commonly used seating positions for string sections. The closest would be the american positioning, which goes from high to low (so Vl1, Vl2, Vla, Vlc, Cb behind Vlc) from left to right. But in this position the violas would already be sitting more to the right, than to the left. The other most common positioning is the german, which goes Vl1, Vlc, Vla, Vl2 from left to right, with the Bassi again placed behind the Celli. Again the Viola would be more to the right. The Berlin Philharmonics in particular favor a modified version of the american positioning, where Violas and Celli swap places, so Violas are now hard right and Celli a bit off center to the right. Last one i know of is the modified german, where again Violas and Celli swap, finally placing the Violas a bit off center to the left. This positioning is pretty rare and I have not visited a concert, where the string section was actually placed like this. A conducter friend of mine just informed me of its existence. Note also, that the Basses are never positioned besides the Celli, but always behind them (very few exceptions apply, such as for example when the Basses are placed at the backside of the stage, which is sometimes done due to room acoustics, for example in the vienna musikverein or the berlin konzerthaus). Besides this totally unnecessaryily nitpicky detail, awesome video as usual!

I got on zoom and did the percussion balances with the producer attended, and then processed the percussion all on one aux channel. Very little processing to any of the individual drums. The rest of the instrumentation fell into place pretty easily after that, as did the vocals.

have you noticed bass synths n 808s being panned from the center, sometimes even wide?

Typically I don't personally pan basses and sub out left or right. Usually center or concentric stereo. Not never ever - but just need a really compelling reason as to why I'm doing it.
