Parallel parking is one of those things that is tough when you first start. But when you’re practised and more confident, you get the feel of the car. It becomes second nature
@alexevans9379

Definitely! It was tricky cuz I found that instructors teach you how to drive THEIR car, which might not necessarily work in your own car. My second instructor was a far better teacher.

My top tip... Only opt for very tight spaces if there is no other option. I see people take minutes to parallel park to save them a 30 second walk from a wide open space just up the road. Similar happens in supermarket carparks, spend minutes trying to get close to the store to save them 30 second walk.

In supermarkets i park the car further away than anyone else that way you don’t get anyone dinking your door, it’s always the same idiots who can’t be arsed walking who dink it! I had one woman a couple of weeks ago resting her door against my car at the nursery while i was dropping my son off, she drove up the one way system the wrong way and I went mad at her. She said she was running late so she thought it was an acceptable excuse to drive like a bellend! Following Tuesday she does the same! I might leave 5 minutes earlier next week and make her go around the hospital correctly 😂

This made me think of another situation that u might consider for a video... sometimes ppl completely box your parked car in, not leaving a proper amount of space for u to get out of a parallel parking spot. Maybe u can make a video on how to best wiggle out of something like that.

Have had that happen to me recently in the UK. Parked outside my house around lunchtime. About 5pm a converted people carrier with an oversized 'Leave 3m space for wheelchair access' parked about two inches from the front of my vehicle. Later my neighbour managed to squeeze into the marked bay below the people carrier. Next morning the driver of the people carrier finds he can't get out. My daughter caught him ramming backwards and forwards to get out videoing on her phone. Waiting to hear back from my insurance. The driver was quite shocked at being confronted with two phones videoing as I had just got out from the shower (but was dressed!). Needless to say it was my fault for blocking him in - my tracker can prove otherwise in conjunction with dashcam footage.

In regards to dipping the mirror, as I'm sure you know, this happens on BMWs that are equipped with electric folding mirrors as long as the mirror select switch is one way or the other. I always found it dipped the mirror far too low to only see the curb and nothing else. Luckily, it's easy enough to code BMWs and change the value of the mirror dip so that it doesn't dip as far down, this really helps!

how to *actually* parallel park in an *actual* tight space: 1. Pull up parallel next to the car that you wish to parallel park behind, maintaining about a 3ft distance from it 2. align the back of your car with the back of the other car (or front depending on which way it's facing) that you wish to parallel park behind 3. full lock your steering wheel in the direction that you will be reversing into the spot 4. reverse back, keeping the steering wheel full locked, until the car is angled around roughly 35-40 degrees from the car you're parking behind 5. once this angle is reached, stop and straighten up your steering wheel 6. reverse straight back, keeping your steering wheel straight, until the front of your car is now in line with the back (or front) of the car you wish to parallel park behind 7. full lock your steering wheel in the opposite direction to which you full locked in step 3 8. reverse into the spot you're welcome

Had to park at 4am in Portsmouth as was night time taxi driver. No parking spaces past 7pm ever. So at 4 in morning was only spaces that other people couldn’t get into. Had to park sometimes by touching bumpers with both cars front and back inching it in, backwards and forth 20 odd times to fit in spaces with less than 8inches combined front and back. Almost rocking the cars on their suspensions to get another inch of space. My record was in a space when the car in front had a tow bar which allowed me to work around it and let me to rock it on the suspension a little more than usual. When I got in the space my bumper was touching the car behind and the gap to the tow bar was the width of Vauxhall Astra key fob. My day driver could not go to work that day because cars on both side’s didn’t move the next day and she couldn’t get it out. Because you can’t park touching bumpers in the day but you can at night along as alarms don’t go off.

The technique that I was taught for the first turn. You start the first turn when the rear wheel fo your car is at the rear/front of the car you are alongside. The best way to tell where that point is - on most cars, the centre of the rear wheel is directly below the top of the rear seat. Therefore, as the top of the back seat is at the end of the parallel car, start turning.

The references you use are more or less similar to how I coached majority of my pupils. Know I only do fleet training in vans the first question I ask is, is this manoeuvre necessary. Secondly, in a van with a 25 metre blindspot and no sensors to aid, is that accuracy is second to safety, so being fussy about how tight to the kerb the van is not important due to the 4'4" overhang shaving the kerbstone and any other bits of street furniture. As long as other road users can safely clear my van and I've left enough room ahead to move off all's good.

@bradburyrobinson
@bradburyrobinson 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect it means that as you're looking in the left/passenger mirror as you start the manoeuvre, with the one turn left, then once you've moved a bit and can no longer see any of the road in the mirror you should then put the two right turns on the wheel to start the front end moving in towards the kerb. If you think about what your left mirror can see it's the left side of your car including the left rear wheel, so if you see no road any more then it probably means that your wheel's going to hit the kerb.

Mmm 2nd park, not that tight a space we could not see the car behind. I think it would have helped if you could have shown the position of your car relative to the Renault before you started to reverse and then also shown a view from the kerb side, of your position during the reverse, when you turned the steering wheel etc. When there is a car behind the concern can make getting into a space all the more difficult as there is the worry of hitting it. You also had the time and space to straighten your steering wheel. Put it into a space between cars and your reversing sensors have gone to single tone with your front wheels still full lock to the right and to straighten them you have to shunt. Even better, you have to shunt to get in and out as there is not enough space to reverse in in one. The car behind is what probably makes it more difficult for nervous drivers, you did not have that concern. I have a tow bar on my car and I only stop reversing when the parking sensors have gone to single tone. Without the tow bar there is still quite a gap, with the tow bar on as well.... it's tight.

At one time there was an extra wheel you could have on the back of the car at right angle to the car. to park you put the front of the car into the slot pressed a button and the back of the car was lifted up and the wheel swung the back of the car round into the space to get the wheel was reversed. Nothing like that on the market now and its needed more than ever judging from the muddle I have seen some people in, saw one with a smart car last week trying to get into a gap outside the bank, gave up after a few minutes and drove off so just for kicks I parked my Mitsubishi pick up in the space in one go.

Awkward. I’m using the full lock variation. Yes it does mean you get closer to the car in front when turning in. Mirrors....my boxy Honda jazz (Honda Fit) doesn’t seem to have big enough mirrors for the size of the car-from series 3 onward these cars are considerably bigger than the earlier models. It’s not like a hatchback. The mirrors imo need an extra couple of inches or CM on the bottom. I have to adjust the mirrors quite often because of this. Anyone know if the U.K./EU spec Jazz has smaller EU regulation mirrors compared with the Honda Fit in Japan/US markets? It certainly feels like it. Front + rear parking sensors are almost essential & backup camera is very useful to have.

I'm a new driver and am reasonably confident with parallel parking in optimal conditions but wonder if you have any additional tips about this manoeuvre in a narrow road like mine packed with cars. It means less space for the front of the car to 'swing out' when reversing into the space even if the space is big enough. I tend to give up and park elsewhere!

In the town where I live you have to deal with this constantly, because people never leave enough space for anyone to park easily. One day I spotted a place and decided to go for it, and everyone ask me how I got there. I got out to see and I was surprised myself as I'm usually rubbish at parking, but honestly there was about 6 inches room either end of my car. Back then I had a mk2 renault megane cc which is a fairly long car.

My funniest car parking story was when I was a student and my mate had a Nissan/Datsan sunny car, yes it did have both names on it. He couldn’t get into a space he tried 3 times and said no it won’t fit its to tight. As he pulled out of his final attempt I said stop and told him to reverse slowly as he reversed I grabbed the steering wheel from the passenger seat and steered the car straight into the space absolutely perfect. He did swear and never forgave me ! It might have been more luck than judgement but I had only passed my test a year and the only driving I had done in that time is 2 hire cars for a few days at a time. I have never had any trouble parallel parking and can get in ridiculously small spaces and you need to when you live in Portsmouth, row upon row of terraced house, if you take your car out after 7 no chance of getting a space anywhere near you house, so when you do find a small space that other can’t get into the you find a way lol !

A perfectly decent explanation. Just be wary of vehicles that are parked a long way out from the kerb.... this would indicate to me that the driver is not particularly well practised..... even worse are the ones who use their bumpers for bumping. I've seen it happen all too often 🤔. Stay safe everyone 👍

@@grahamnutt8958 My Jeep Cherokee is battered and bruised, it gets properly used off road and around a farm. I can parallel park it with less that a 1 foot gap at either end and without bumping other vehicles in the process.🙂

Ashley what about a reference point for beginning to reverse into a space? I appreciate that this changes with car size and whether it is facing the same or opposite direction as you but may help some people. I have encouraged my daughter (who is about to start learning) and all her friends to subscribe to your channel.

I haven't done it since my test. I either find a large gap and drive in, or I go somewhere else. I know I could do it, but the only time I need to parallel park, is in town, which is busy and I cannot be bothered stopping and starting because someone wants to slip passed.

I have not parallel parked since passing my test nearly 30 years ago. If the space needs me to parallel park it is too short for me to unload my wheelchair Even street disabled parking spaces are not long enough to unload disability equipment from the boot. then you have to find a drop kerb which means pushing a wheelchair in traffic knowing that you can not be seen in a rear view mirror.

What people must also take into account is that the one and a half times a car is relative to the size of your car, I know it sounds silly pointing this out but we have all seen it. Another thing you could do if your car has the option is let the car park itself.

One problem that I occasionally encounter when parallel parking is having a car come up from behind and pinch my space as I’m about to manoeuvre in!
@ibs5080
@ibs5080 3 жыл бұрын
What I do to try and mitigate that is (as well as signalling early of course) is initially stop ALONGSIDE the space I am aiming for until the car behind me stops. I may even pump my brakes a few times to flash my brakes lights to further highlight the fact that I'm parking. Then move forward to the starting position to parallel park and very quickly and immediately select reverse gear to bring on my reversing lights right away.

Then why did you not do the same, go in forwards, that is, other driver must have had a little chuckle over that one, Sorry but it seems that it was your own fault.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoOwgnh4jNRkl7M Incidentally my reply was more to do with the situation where the driver behind simply drives up to my bumper rather than taking my space. I realize though that your response was more to the OP.

So many drivers lose this skill within weeks of passing their test. Instead I see drivers going in forwards, often by bashing up and down the kerb without a thought to potential damage and alignment issues. One of my mates - an habitual "bump parker" - always grumbles jealously that I'm "lucky" I've got a good car that doesn't eat tyres like his does!
