Thank you so much! I’m fighting gwyn right now and it is very difficult. I’ve seen messages saying “weakness: parry” but I have never tried to parry in souls one. I previously played souls 3 first, and the parry window is very late. And you making it clear that the parry window is a lot earlier really clears the confusion in my mind! I’ll go try to beat him tomorrow and hopefully I succeed.

With Gwyn you might find it easier to block his first swing and then parry the second! The black knight shield is perfect for this, I find. Or the heater shield with enough stamina. Good luck!

@@HowToSouls alright thanks for the reply I’ll try to parry his second hit, and I am already using the black knight shield (throughout the entire game). Gwyn is too hard to kill without using parry.. high damage, high poise, high speed and insane tendency to attack. I went through the channel and really appreciate the hard work you are putting into it and keep it up! I’ll use your remaster play-through when I start my NG (since I missed almost everything because I played it blind without any guidance, and I think I missed the dlcs too. But I’ll leave those to NG).

I went into this game after playing Bloodborne thinking I could breeze right passed it, boy oh boy was I wrong for at least the first hour I would constantly get slapped around by almost every enemy all because I kept messing up my parry. But hopefully after watching this I won't get bullied as often by a bunch of annoying pixels when I go to parry lol.

Just started my Souls journey and I can do pretty well parrying bigger enemies like the Black Knights. But guys my size like the Forest Hunters are impossible. I've been trying to learn how to parry on some of them since the bonfire is right there and I have no souls to lose right now, so it's a super fast die and retry area. But I just can't get the parry window on these guys. I'm usually too early. EDIT: Ok, I think I'm understanding where I'm going wrong. Apparently, parrying has nothing to do with the enemy's weapon size. It's all about how close you are to the enemy themselves. If you're not close enough to them, you can't parry, even if they have a long weapon that _looks_ like it should be parryable at a longer range.

I've picked the knight class with medium starter shield and was running around having no clue why I can't parry anyone. I was thinking I need to parry when the attack is about to hit, not when it's just started. Thanks for the explanation! Still not going to change to small shields. It feels good just to block too.

Beat DS1. Never parried. Got my friend into the souls games because of Elden Ring. He finished ds3 and BB. A while back he asked if he could run DS1. (he comes over since I got a PlayStation) anywho, I decided to re run DS1 myself so I can guide him. Except this time I didn't save solaire so I had to fight Gwyn alone. He was almost to endgame so I figured here try the final boss on my file before you get there yourself. This man proceeded to show me, a seasoned souls player how to parry like a god. Dude parried the fuck outta Gwyn. I was shooketh!

I started my first playthrough the other day, and parrying (especially against the black knights) has been a profund imbuggerance for me - this definitely helped, though I am gonna have to keep practicing - probably quite a lot - before using it on Havel (or even succeeding in using it on the black knights tbh) though. one thing to add is you need to be very close to parry. i notice with black knight, if he is not super close, he will make a combo even if you parry the first attack and the 2nd attack i think is unparryable

The parrying in Dark Souls 1 and Demon's Souls is crazy fuckin easy, and I consider myself to have awful hand-eye coordination. The best way to learn the groove and rhythm of parrying is by practicing, as all things. There's no anticipation, no sheer luck and good faith. It's just you and one frame 6 input that instantly does what you want without fail. Try and fight enemies with very slow start ups, the hollows you find up to the sewers are the best and earliest source of practice. You'll either get the hang of it in no time, or just kill them before they can do anything. It's the easiest out of all the entries Fromsoft put out. Imagine it like those games that reward you for pressing attack again after your hit lands. You could parry an undead's dank breath the moment it starts DRIFTING toward you. I cannot emphasize the ease of the parrying in this game enough. It's so intimidating, but so easy to learn and so satisfying. Almost to a fault. Fastest attack in the game? Parried the moment you blink. Slow attacks like the silver knight? You bet your sweet bippy you can.

yea i just settled for leveling my strength up to the point where my broadsword can break the warriors poise in two hits and the follow up is a one shot. idk what it is, probably the fact that i came from games that were more catered to casual fanbases such as the spiderman adventure and batman arkham games where combat is far smoother, snappier and faster overall, but every damn enemy in this game feels like its got the longest windup ever which throws me off because my parry motion on the other hand is fast as shit.

I played sekiro before this and i thought that the parry system would be a breeze. I was wrong. In sekiro its more forgiving. Miss the parry it turns to a block. Miss a pary in dark souls you die. It was also easier to see when to parry . sekiro.

Honestly when there's multiple enemies a legit strat is to just turn and run away and let them reset, try to pull one at a time. Parrying when you've got two attacks coming at you at once is risky and requires great timing, so I'd instead try to bait both attacks and run round to backstab one instead.
