How to Pass the Seated Guard in BJJ

When most grapplers are taught open guard passing, they are taught with their opponents on their back and not sat up in the seated guard. But in a match, most guard players will sit up in order to take their grips and look to enter into their guard of choice.
In this video, I will go over 5 ways you can pass a seated opponent and get passed their guard before they can attack you!

Thanks Jon. I can’t tell you how frustrated I’ve been over the last couple of months because of this. At our school, we don’t usually start sparring session with both on the feet going takedowns. Therefore, someone will opt to play a sit up guard and I’ve been racking my brain on how to get into a more dominant position from the onset of the match. Very timely. Thanks!!

Yeah it’s a tricky one because it’s so much easier for the bottom player to set up some kind of an annoying guard than it is for you to get a full pass in. Hopefully this helps you in your fight.

@@JonThomasBJJI used to walk straight into someone’s dangerous guard without thinking 💭 - your point about backing up is important as you don’t want to just give a guard player his grips - it’s like when you’re on bottom sometimes you can get back to your knees or just sit up…took me a while to figure that out - too obvious 😂

After every session , as a white belt, I come away going what the hell was I supposed to do in situation X . Last night it was "how do I attack a seated open guard'. I'm getting comfortable escaping closed guard and attacking from that position but when the guy knows 6 ways to tie me up I fail every time to even try passing a seated open guard. I was trying to push them to their back every time to get to a place where I have some idea how to attack, lol . Anyhow - every session I hit a new road block and this is the first place I end up to move forward. Amazing channel.

When I leg drag, a few of my team mates throw the opposite leg over without over committing it, landing their foot somewhere midline between my pelvis and chest, and recover an open guard. So helpful man! I feel comfortable attacking the guard when the person is lying down but the seated guard is always a pain. Could you cover gaining the second hook from back control? I have a particular training partner who is very very hard to score full back takes on, I always end up with the bottom hook and seatbelt but they're doing that running man defense and just blocking the top hook with their life and turtling when I try to reset them. Thanks!

Great video! I’ve been training about three months as a white belt and I’ve found it super difficult to get passed guard when my opponent is sitting like this. Is it normal for the upper belts to start rolls like this? I’ve noticed usually with blue and purple belts they automatically start in this position and it’s up to me to pass their guard.
@af4396
@af4396 6 ай бұрын
Blue and purple is when most schools will have them focus a lot on open guard, and by sitting into open guard you can start playing it immediately, plus they're probably lazy or don't know takedowns lol.

@@JonThomasBJJ Hey Jon, yes it's the pass where you use your knee. The person first stiff arms your arms, and then they stand up and use their knee to split your legs, and they also put their hands on your hips to do this. In gi, I just go to de la Riva guard. Would you do the same for no gi?
