Top stuff kirk. Respect for the decorators that will follow is class its pride in your work. As a plasterer myself its something that is totally lacking these days from sparks and plumbing that leave pushfit joints and cable clips proud of the existing wall for us to sort out. Every trade should remember and respect the fact that some other tradesmen is following you.

Thanks Kirk. I've noticed you have mentioned a few times not to use gypsum on the exterior walls, when there is a solid wall. The preferred would be lime if replacing lime. But what do you use most on the exterior walls? Sand & cement? I think you've mentioned this before. If so, why sand and cement? Does this handle moisture much better than gypsum? Thanks so much for your great videos
@kenandbarbie2281Ай бұрын
Sand and cement will also absorb moisture like a sponge, but I know a lot of plasterers recommend this. I suppose you could add a plasticiser to reduce moisture penetration perhaps. The problem is that render will leave your wall freezing cold in winter and prone to condensation and black mould - I speak from experience!
@lukedruggan6839Ай бұрын
You can add waterproof materials to sand and cement such as SBR, its very rare that sand and cement will blow but it can crack, gypsum based plasters suck up moisture are prone to blowing and holding damp @kenandbarbie2281

Kirk, great vid as always, mate! What do you recommend as a back coat on solid walls then? In our Victorian house we have one wall that is rendered, with a skim coat on top, and the wall is freezing cold in winter, always attracting condensation and mould (despite best efforts to ventilate etc). Some walls still have the original Victorian plaster (lime and sand?) and don't get as cold. We had another wall hardwalled and skimmed - doesn't seem to be attracting moisture. Exterior of house is rendered.

Your work is amazing! Apparently our fingers can detect a 1/10th of a mm difference so you feeling by hand and not noticing anything means you have got it perfectly done. i have summer house than has been nothing but a problem since we bought the home, 3 years ago I had to replace 142m2 of 18mm OSB, insulation and the all of the felt roof. i have just used 17 5.2m 190mm faced tongue and grove boards to replace the floor under the lino they had installed. My issue is apart from the bowed and damaged plaster boards walls and ceilings... it the arch that was made. Instead of an angled ceiling the decided to make it an arch.... any advice including paying you come and fix the ceiling and walls would be such a boon. I am at a loss as how it tackle it.

Truly professional. You legend. PS. Can I ask what you think of using. Tetrion?
@jonathanbuzzard1376Ай бұрын
My top tip is to take the backbox off the wall, put some bonding/hardwall in the hole and then put the backbox back in and screw down. Remove the squidged out plaster. It helps get the backbox nice and straight as getting the back in the brick/block flat is tricky. Also once set the screw then basically becomes a chicken rivet because the backbox will be stuck rock solid in the wall via the plaster in my experience.

Can't tell you how many damp replacement window surrounds there are in solid walls where gypsum plaster has been used, good lad.

I'm fascinated how many different types of plastering there are over there. I'm not a plasterer, but where I am in New Zealand, I've only had to choose between Gib tradeset 15, 45, and 90 for jointing. And then there's premixed air drying stuff in a bucket for topping. Amateur DIYers use it for jointing too, which I disagree with. Paper tape is used for joints and I've had to repair plenty of cracks at home where fibreglass mesh tape had been used instead of paper assumingly by lazy plasterer in the past.

@Sandysand701Ай бұрын
No need for glue, just give the old dry dusty plaster in the chase a good wet down, push the bonding well in around the cable/conduit, let it set, put a tight skim coat level with the old plaster, job done. Can mix some cement in with the bonding and the finish coat to make it set quick, this also makes it go harder.

@nihow06Ай бұрын
Hi kirk. Is it possible to plaster over wood?
@kenandbarbie2281Ай бұрын
Not a plasterer, but I think it would depend how large the wooden area is. We had studs embedded in a single skin brick wall (Victorian) and the plasterer secured galvanised wire mesh over it before plastering (hardwall, then skim). We got some cracking across the line of the wood in some places as the bone-dry wood soaked up so much water from the plaster and cracked as it all dried out. Easy to remedy with some "fine-surface" filla at decorating stage, but I'm guessing the wood should have been primed/sealed with something before plastering!
