Go to LEARNTREEHAB.COM and download a copy of our new eBook just released for Earth Day! The ideas presented here are designed to inform homeowners and help them understand where to focus money and resources during their next tree evaluation project. There are lots of preservation based approaches out there that do not involve tree removal and debris disposal. We discuss some fundamental approaches to tree health and maintenance that can be applied during any phase of homeownership. Pre-existing native trees, planted trees, volunteer trees, and large heritage trees will be the primary subjects in this book. We talk about things like identifying critical areas for improvement and upgrade. Where to focus resources during each phase of preservation action. How to evaluate progress and determine next steps based on budget and seasonal requirements. These are the practices that we’ve used during the last two and half decades of working with trees. Transplanting a pot bound peach tree purchased from the nursery. The root structure has been trained to grow according to the size of the pot that is too small, forcing the roots to "encircle" the planting medium, root ball and then the root collar or "flare". Email us to get money saving tips, risk assessment guidelines and so much more to ensure the health and safety of your trees!

I bought a small peach tree from Home Depot, it was completely root bound. While transplanting, I had to cut the container to get it out. I had initially transplanted it as is into a bigger container, after watching this video I dug it out and removed the extra roots and trimmed the remaining roots.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. I am about to transplant my new Elberta Peach Tree and the roots are bound just like this one in your video. I am in zone 8b Oregon City, Oregon, it is November, early winter (mild this year), when would be the best time to complete this process of cleaning the roots and transplanting? Thank you for your time and information. Would you also mind sharing your soil mixture as well?

I was given a baby peach sapling in a 5 gallon bucket. It grew organically on its own off of a peach pit in their yard and they dug it up and gave it to me. It’s about 18 inches tall and very leafy but he told me it might be root bound. I’m not sure if this is what I need to do? We are building a house and it’s 20 months away. What size are those containers that you transplanted that tree into? I’m thinking that will be perfect time for it to settle into a new container while our house is being built and then I can transplant it into the ground. Thank you for such an informative video!

Yes. And it's best to not let the tree fruit the first year. Trees needs to focus on rooting not fruiting after transplant. Get it in the ground and enjoy the beauty, fruit will come in the next year or two.

Why can't the peach tree be planted for 3-6 months just because you cut the roots? What's the difference between the pot and the ground? And if I have to wait that long then what about my customers that wanting planting? Am I not able to buy the plant or tree from the nursery, cut the roots like you did and plant it right away? How do I go about this with customers?

My question would be about dwarf trees that are grown in pots. I want to grow a dwarf peach tree on my deck. I would like a dwarf tree and not a semi dwarf tree. I wonder what size pot should be my final size to help minimize the amount of circling in the pot.

It’s good to know experienced arborists also forget to check roots. Curious though. If peach trees are supposed to be pruned about 1-2 ft up to have an open canopy, what good is buying a tall peach tree. I’m stuck with a 2 yr old tree which I’ll probably have to cut it all the way back because it has the wrong shape. 😏

I know this is an older post, but I have a couple questions. I could grow peach trees 2 miles away, but not where I am at. Tried several times with bare root. I currently have a desert like micro climate. Is it because it’s too hot and cold? Sandy soil. They generally die off and come from the root and shrub. We installed drip irrigation this year because of drought, but peach already died. This one came with a strange plug for roots-it was weird. Apples, plums, berries are all doing ok. My other issue is a Blaze Maple that was gorgeous 20’ tree and I forgot to cover the trunk in winter and it frost cracked and fell over. Since then it sends up a ton of suckers. I trained one vigorous sucker and it is doing Great, But it still sends up suckers at the base. Is there any way to stop the suckers? Z5a, WI. Crazy weather doesn’t help and this year had late frost after hot weather that broke dormancy and took out a grape and winery lost crop. Thanks for great tips on root bound trees. Sister in law had a locust tree and it was severe. Thank you!

Hey, I’m from the U.P, Zone 5a as well! Sounds tough over there but we have similar conditions of soil. If it’s been pretty dry, that might be the issue. They can tolerate the sandy soil if it has enough organic matter to feed on, but if it’s too dry the tree might dry out too quickly, too often. How did that second one pan out with drip, and did you ever get a soil test?

Hello Berry, you were doing fine transplanting that peach tree too. You said you were made your own dirt and filling out the pot with dirt. My question is why would you use a terminology like dirt? Do you know that dirt is dead it contains nothing no organisms or anything living in soil contains life has nutrients microorganisms, so please tell me why you were used to terminology dirt as an arborist please
