I'm seeing some comments here already explain Anduin. Can't believe my transcribing LOTR (thanks for the shout-out few episodes back, Brian) is coming in handy to correct the very podcast where I got a shout-out. So there are many many rivers in middle earth but Anduin is referred to as The Great River, it's extremely strategic in terms of territorial control of area around Gondor. It's mentioned perhaps more than any other geographical feature of middle earth (at least in my reading so far) and is also the river in which Isildur (who cut Sauron's finger) lost the one ring in. Saruman spent many years searching Anduin thinking that the one ring was still in or around it when Gollum, and later Bilbo, had already found it.

One of my friends really wants a fountain pen so for christmas i am getting them a twsbi eco (since its easy to clean, looks cool, also doesn't have the hassle of converter/cartridge/refilling a cartridge/etc) but I was iffy on if I should get them a single bottle of ink but thats a commitment so then I thought, the best part to me are the various fun inks which can be hits or misses depending on various factors, so I've decided to play safe and reuse the goulet sample containers to make my own little samples using my favorite inks!

Quick question for you. Rumors are floating around (or will be soon) about a new ink from Noodler’s named Turkey Hammock. As with many of Nate’s products, there’s a back story and wonderful illustrations. TH (as it’s become known) refers to the practice by Civil War soldiers attaching their overcoats to a tree to form a type of sling, so they could sleep above ground level. The result was effective, but tended to look like large round fuzzy blobs hanging from tree branches. General Custer is credited with naming them Turkey Hammocks (it was not a compliment). Just wondering if you’ll have this in time for the holidays? To be honest, it’s not a pleasant color to look at and tends to evoke a response of “What IS that???” (much, like it’s namesake), but I find the history irresistible.

Potential Question for a future Pencast: Are the feed ink channels the same or different widths as they come out of the factory across the spectrum from EF to stub nibs? I'm wondering whether the nib tip width (EF to stub) is the only factor in how thick a line a pen will put down, or whether the feed contributes through optimized channel widths, as it might have implications if you are swapping nibs to different tip widths while keeping the same feed.

super fun content, I love that you guys put this out right as i need a chillout after work! RE LEFTIES: right handers don't always consider that it's not just about the dry times: i push my hand across ink so the ink i use has to not dry-smudge easily. Would love to see some content/tracking on that (examples: anything Diamine is beautiful but ends up on my palm even if dry, mild sheen is pretty unusable for me, and Nitrogen is a calamity worn as much on my person as it is on the page; counter examples: almost all Herbin main line inks stay on the page, same for R&K, same for Birmingham) --> I realize adding a leftie palm smudge test for all inks retroactively might be a herculean ask but if you could have a leftie (with maybe sweaty palms?) write a paragraph and check for smudge on the main sellers and newly added inks, that'd be super useful (my own smudge samples available upon request!!)
@Taipou3 жыл бұрын
I'm a lefty too and I love Diamine Syrah, which looks beautiful, while still professional and doesn't smudge. I just noticed the writing hand emoji comes in many skin colors on Android, but there's no lefty variant. Booooh! ✍️

About Drew's comment about the Pilot Elite's (E95s) cap I'd second that it has unique feel to it. the material they used always foxed me. It doesn't feel like plastic, it doesn't feel like metal either. I feels colder than the rest of the plastic body (burgundy part). It looks like it's made out of thin brass or stiff plastic, painted with a white-silvery colored paint and jacketed with some transparent lacquer. It's really neat. It doesn't catch finger prints neither scratches. Really a sleek pen for the price. PS: you can take apart the Pilot Elite/Silvern . It's just a painstaking process especially the first time. you can't remove the nib by pulling it like on a Lamy pen. The nib's heel is glue to the body so you have to loosen the glue first. The metal part makes the connection between the feed and converter is also tightly screwed in the section. Unless the pen isn't working *I wouldn't recommand* taking it apart. If you want to make a good cleaning, just use a pen flush.

When you guys said random questions I really did not expect that level of random! Woah! And, Brian, I’ll take lady bugs over stink bugs any day!!! I had a tree right outside my window that collected stink bugs when I was in high school. It was horrible! We are loving the Pencasts and look forward to them every week, waiting for them to drop onto KZbin early friday evening UK time. Got back into fountain pens a few years ago and this addiction is now shared by my wife and we now have quite the collection. Trying to keep to the Drew method of having only a few pens inked up at a time, but go full Brian at this time of year as both our birthdays are close to Christmas and there will be several new pens each that just need to be immediately tested. Not entirely sure on our facts being from the UK, but isn't it a thing that the President pardons a Turkey at Thanksgiving? Picturing this Turkey living a life of luxury, relaxing in its Turkey Hammock. The Turkey Hot Tub just sounds so wrong though.

They are far too much expensive now in the second hand market… By the way, as online fountain pen retailers, what do you think about people buying limited edition pens for the only purpose of reselling them for more money and making benefit of it? (I mean, they don’t even put them off the box and try them, they just wait for the stocks of official retailers to finish and then offer the pen at a higher price, is that even legal?). Are they hurting the industry in your opinion? Or do they contribute to it somehow?

About Q4, Lamy Dark Lilac came out before I was in the hobby and it makes me so sad because purple is my fav color and I would’ve totally bought the pen and the ink. I still hope they’ll offer it again in the future ☹️

I just baught a 2nd E95S with a medium nib in addition to the one I already own with EF nib. It´s such a great little pen. I would agree that the cap is a very thin metal with some layers of lacquer on it. :)

I will not have a turkey hammock until I have one for myself. The turkey can just stand up. My pen regret is about my very first fortune pen - a Parker 45. I suspect that it was a pen aimed at children, since I was just in fourth grade. Nice looking pen, though.

Turkey Hammock. Please do Pelican M200s for your pen of the week. My first fountain pen was an amber M200 demonstrator back in the 80s. It has proven to be a very deep rabbit hole.

You know for my last two Thanksgivings I have used a turkey hammock to roast my Butterball. It provides support and comfort, but offers a sense of freedom. The airflow is fantastic...

They say that in Singapore and the South Pacific, they use scales with nets to weigh their fowl and those scales are called "Turkey Hammocks"

I usually watch these pencasts in pieces and it takes me a day or two to get through because...well... kids... lol but I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Brian's emotionless staring, "lack of systems" and sidetrack to Sean Connery (r.i.p) being a handsome man also had me crying laughing and I agree with Drew about the pen cap for the E95s! So smooth and satiny and such a beautiful companion for my turkey hammock. On a side note- I look forward to the festive sweaters! (When the weather is appropriate) we don't want you melting Drew, especially after your 2 giant cups of warm beverages. 😂

LOL thanks for watching until the Turkey Hammock showed up, Jaylene! We're trilled to hear that you enjoy the randomness as much as we do! - Drew

Drew! That will not work! You forgot the three drops of Noodler's The Heart of Darkness in the Cthulu summoning brew! Turkey hammocks would not support the weight of Singapore.

Definitely need to include Heart of Darkness! (And no blood from a human sacrifice?)

If I’m remembering correctly “you heard me, Bucko” was from Happy Days! I think Richie Cunningham called people Bucko when he was trying to be tough. I love to watch Happy Days reruns while laying in my turkey hammock.

Turkey Hammock: I special ordered the rubberized grip for all of my Lamy Studios after getting the all black and experiencing the grip on it. Love the pens but couldn't handle the slick grip for extended writing sessions. I'm guessing that you will have the same experience.
