I really appreciated your answers and comments on Cadcock's Q & A about what to write with all the pens in one's possession. I have been a journal writer for about 20 years in the digital format, but since acquiring 40 or so fountain pens have been writing cursive journals quite often. Drew's comments about writing letters of appreciation to people was spot on. My experience is that just a short Thank you card with some personal note is a wonderful way to solidify friendships. Thanks for your insights.

I loved the discussion about Mt. Everest. I actually met Beck Wethers several years ago when I was in charge of the guest speaker for an event at the Kennedy Space Center (I worked for NASA). I had seen a videotape of him recanting his experience and knew he would be perfect for our event. Everyone was captivated by his retelling of the catastrophe, but to be honest, he wasn't a very interesting person in person. He was very quiet and left immediately after the event. Nevertheless, he gave a fascinating presentation. Thanks for the memories!

Well hello there! I didn't imagine this would be the day when I find a kindred soul in more ways than just fountain pens. A fellow boardgamer! I love how Adrianne talks about them, it echoes greatly my own thoughts. It's the figuring out how things work that makes it so much fun, the puzzle. Oh I love that! Thank you for that! Also I use my boardgames as an excuse to use my fountain pens, cause I do rules overviews by hand just to help remember and understand the rules, it helps me. But now I have to know... which game would you get Drew to learn? :)

As for what/who to write: Before you throw out junk-mail, check to see if any includes prepaid postage envelopes. If so, write a letter to some stranger that likely has the lousy job of opening unsolicited credit card offers or life insurance policies or whatever mountain of mess you've been provided. Treat it like a "message in a bottle" or a "prayer to a demi-god". Peace!

I usually listen to this pencast in the background as I tidy up my office or organize my bookshelves, but sometimes I just have to stop and sit down to listen or look. That's usually to look at a pen that you're reviewing, but every once in a while it's because one of you says something so outrageous I have to respond. Drew! A main sequence star like our sun can remain on the main sequence for about ten billion years. Six or seven stars are born in the Milky Way galaxy every year, with a total of about three solar masses. A small number? Also in a year, stars totaling one solar mass die. At over 13 billion years old, the Milky Way is still producing more stars than are dying. The best estimate is that the galaxy now contains over 100 billion stars. Of those 100 billion stars, you can separate out about 5,000 with the naked eye. Most of those are within a thousand light years of Earth. And almost all of those are still alive. Betelgeuse may have gone supernova by now, we don't know. But we can see that it's in its death throes. Polaris (the North Star, also designated Polaris Aa), on the other hand, is nowhere near death, which in stellar terms means its millions of years away from dying. Polaris is a yellow supergiant, about 70 million years old, burning hydrogen much more quickly than the sun. That means it won't live nearly as long as the sun and will probably die in about 5 million years. Almost all the stars you can see in the sky are still "alive". You're seeing ancient light, but not the light of stars long gone. When you see that haze of the Andromeda galaxy, larger than ours and 2 million light years away, you're still seeing mostly stars that are still living. You have to look at galaxies billions of light years away to see stars that have largely since died, but they're being replaced, so none of those galaxies are completely dead unless they've suffered some cosmic catastrophe. Look at the night sky and you'll see a living cosmos, not the fossil light of a dead one. Adrianne, the James Webb telescope (JWT) can see farther back in time than any other because it sees more distant objects. But when it looks at Polaris, it looks no farther back in time than your own eye. The light captured by the telescope takes the same amount of time to reach it as the light that hits your eye. So the JWT can't show us whether Polaris is already gone. Greenland sharks are predators, but there's no evidence that one has ever attacked humans. They swim in cold oceans, and any pirates who ever hit that water probably died within minutes of hypothermia. A Greenland shark may have nibbled on a pirate or two as they sank to provide nutrients to creatures of the deep ocean.

Hi there love the show! As A Moroccan living in the Netherlands (hope you’ll have a lovely vacation Adrianne) I have to say Saylor has it exactly right. The “Sailor Pro Gear Slim Tea Time III Moroccan Mint Tea - mint & sugar” is pretty clear. The green is the mint (also know as “Neh Neh” it’s not spearmint but a different kind of mint) the golden yellow is the tea and the white (sorry drew cream in tea is not common in morocco hahaha) is the sugar. But the “Sailor Pro Gear Tea Time III Moroccan Mint - kissan” is really unexpected kissan (prenounced in Arabic “key san”) means glasses. The pen does not represent tea, but a very traditional type of decorated tea glass (we drink tea in glasses). If you google image “moroccan tea glass red” you’ll see some examples (they are in different colors but red and the translucent are the most common). Hope this wasn’t too long to read. love the content keep it up.

Of the new products, the Endless Explorer refillable journal sounded right up my alley as I'm in love with Traveler's Notebooks and the whole system of it. I was intrigued by the idea of cactus leather and looked at the product on the Goulet pens website. I noticed that at the bottom of the description, there's a note that says there is a typo on the back of the box claiming it is made of cactus leather instead of full grain leather. That explains Drew's confusion on how it could be classified as full-grain leather if it was in fact made of cactus. Just an interesting detail that I noticed! I am hoping to get one soon, yay for 7 mm grid. I'm also ecstatic to see the Goulet pencast stickers available as a set, can't wait to purchase!

Another way you could use your pens, which ties into journaling in a way, is stream of consciousness writing. I take 10 minutes of quiet in my day (like when having my morning coffee) set my timer to 10 minutes and just sit and write whatever comes to mind. It doesn’t have to make sense, but you just write as your brain thinks. Very interesting to re-read after the fact, and can be useful to see any ‘themes/trends’ which come up in your ‘subconscious’ - can give you an opportunity to look into those things a little closer if you’d like. Love using my pens for this. Good pens, good paper and amazing thoughts…

On the subject of what to write. I do what I call 'brain dumping'. I'll just write what I'm thinking about. It can be like a conversation with myself. Sometimes it's what is going on in life, what some future plans are, or even what changes I need to make. I'll also write about the pen that I'm using. What I think of it, how it writes, and how it feels. Is it reliable or is there a specific ink it likes? Brain dumping is basically a collection of meaningless meanderings and I've filled many notebooks with it.

The perforated pages in the Endless Recorder are great. If you don't want to tear the page out, the perforations are utterly ignorable. But more than once I have been journaling in a cafe and another pen enthusiast shows up, so I've been able to let them try out whatever I've got on me, and then tear the page out to take back and compare with their inks back home. Pretty sure I've sold at least a couple bottle of Sailor Manyo Koke that way.

Can you please cover loose paper? Everyone covers notebooks, journals and planners, but looseleaf seldom gets mentioned. Not everyone journals or uses a planner. Some still write letters. Reasonably priced fountain pen friendly envelopes would also be greatly appreciated, if covered. They're really never mentioned. As to the pen draft, I'd expand to vintage, for myself. 😁 Preferred them since my first Esterbrook J. Which is not that difficult to clean. Nib units remove easily, making it easy to get at the ink sacs for cleaning. In my experience, easier than some cartridge converter pens. 1: A Wahl-Eversharp original Decoband type with the adjustable nib. Wahl-Eversharps are my favourite gold nibbed pen. So, around $500 with some searching. 2: A Parker 51. I love the Vacumatic version over the aerometric type. It's almost a requirement for any vintage collection, though they're very dry writers usually, and VERY stiff. They're from the heyday of carbon copies, so... And available all day long for $150. 3: A Sheaffer's Balance Junior. I like the shape, and the Junior nib is fairly flexible. And lever filler pens are easy to work on, if needed. Even though the Sheaffer's tend to be "glued shut" with a proprietary shellac based sealant. Available for around $100, restored, though mine have been significantly cheaper. $25, tops.😁 4: back to Wahl-Eversharp. A Skyline from the 1940s. Again, my favourite gold nibbed pens, and there's the visual interest of the Henry Dreyfuss Art Deco design. Looks like a Skyline train. Which he also designed. Can be $100+, all 3 I own have been $36, max. Just gotta hunt.😉 Highly underappreciated, IMO. 5: GOTTA include an old Esterbrook. My first love. 😁 MANY nib options, very durable, easy to restore and clean, and the patterns, especially the earlier ones. The chatoyance! Restored, if you pay more than $60 for the J series, you have been ripped off. I've never paid more than $26, and many still work right away. Sacs are still working after 70+ years. Not unusual for a lot of vintage pens, in my experience, but Esterbrook seems to have a higher success rate for this. I still like the 2668 or 9668 firm medium nibs. My first was a 2668, and a better writer than the original gold nibbed pen that I had. Just A really great pen, IMO. You can even get one with the "BELL SYSTEM PROPERTY" imprint, de rigeur for ANY Esterbrook collection. And there's so many out there, regularly sell for around $10. 😁

You should all take a Myers-Briggs test because there are gradations of Es vs Is, etc. So, for example, I have always tested as an E, yet as I have gotten older, I tend to process things internally rather than talking to someone about it. Also the J is the person who likes closure. In other words, if there is something "hanging", the J will want to bring it to completion, as opposed to a P who is o.k. with it hanging. BTW, the draft was fun. Perhaps you should do a similar draft, only that you are drafting pens for the other person.

Agree completely about taking the MBTI and having a trained person interpret it for you. The eight terms in the digest and the many combinations thereof do not mean precisely what we think of in ordinary usage. Describing yourself based on what you think you are is about as accurate as claiming to be a surgeon because you removed your kid's splinter, or a traffic engineer because you wrecked your car.

Love the shirt Drew! And it's great having Adrienne back again! Your last team-up was actually the first contemporary Pencast I watched (i.e. the week it was released). For the draft.... I mean, no Lamy 2k? No Pilot VP with the EF (that was on your "best nib list") instead of the Schon (same price as the VP and you already had the Lilliput)? I'm sure there will be a lot of comments on this section of the Pencast😄 Speaking of Retro gaming, you talked a lot about building your own emulation. Ever try what Analogue has to offer? I have their Pocket (handheld) and have used a buddy's SuperNT and it is fantastic. Pricey, but they're using FPGA (not emulation) and the build quality in my experience has been phenomenal. Their next offering is going to be an N64 reboot in 2024 that I'm already saving up for.... 😸

FUN FACTS: 1) The worst team in the league gets to select first in every round and then they go in order, with the Super Bowl winner going last. The theory being that they have access to greatest talent and can turn their fortune around. It doesn’t always work out that way. 2) Teams can trade up and down in order on the night, and can trade future picks, so you can have more or less picks than the seven you’re theoretically entitled to. The least in NFL history is 4 picks in seven rounds and the most is 14. 3) My favourite team, the Ravens, have never had the first overall pick. Good sign LOL.

The Explorer by Endless is my favorite journal! I love Regalia paper and the size and feel of the Explorer is so perfect. Thrilled you guys are carrying it now, but annoyed that I didn't see it before placing the last order. Sigh. 🙄😉

At the beginning speaking on your personality alignments, I got a kick out of how often my name (aka yall sayin Justice) was said. Might need to clip that into my new ringtone!! Regarding the A5 Endless Explorer, I LOVE that it’s a camel color. It’s like the TRC big brother!

Purchasing my sticker sheet prompted me to go through the other stickers again, and for the first time, I saw a barnacles nib sticker!?! How do we get that back in stock? Should I start a petition?

I had to stop what I was doing to check on “sharks are older than the North Star” because I could not BELIEVE this!! I work at a Planetarium, so I’m definitely adding that to my list of surprising space facts!! (here’s one for you: did you know you can fit EVERY OTHER PLANET in the Solar System between the Earth and the Moon? it’s very, very far away!)

Question for the podcast: I'm somewhat new to fountain pens and have been going through an exploratory phase. I have bought a lot of pens in a short time, and sold almost as many. The experimentation have thought me that I like Pilot and I like very fine nibs. I have 823(M), VP(F) and CH92(F). CH92 in Fine is my absolute favourite, but I wish something like that existed with a snap cap. Any recommendations? (I have a Lamy 2000, and like that too, but it's a lot stiffer than the CH92)

Drew, so totally agree with you about the exorbitant price of fast food. I can’t afford to eat out anymore. I cringe at the prices. Only one company still has reasonable prices and that is In-N-Out Burger, so most of the country is out of luck. Are we doomed? Will the prices ever go down at all?

Polaris (the North Star) is a triple star system, and while the brightest of the three in the system is younger than the oldest shark fossil record, the oldest is 1.5 billion years old, making it by far the oldest thing on the list described in the show :-)

1. Esterbrook Estie Botanical Gradens with Techo nib 2. Lamy Safari Cream in medium nib 3. Sailor Pro Gear Slim Stealth Purple with broad nib 4. Twsbi Eco Royal Jade (maybe Indigo with bronze trim for color variation) either in stub or fine nib for nib variety. 5. Pilot Custom 743 Verdigris with FA nib. Lamy 2000 will replace the Sailor if Drew's Slim removes it from the draft.

Drew - if you took that jacket to someone who works with leather, they may be able to alter it into something that you will wear. My friend had a really long one from the 70s. They shortened it into a jacket.

So I have a question for you guys. Which Fountain pen manufacturer has the best customer service in your opinion? (From a standpoint of a customer) As a retailer, you guys rock, but not everyone does. When purchasing a pen from a different retailer I want to be sure, if something is wrong with my copy of a pen I can get it resolved. Appreciate your input.

Oh my gosh, Adrianne, I'm obsessed with Mt. Everest, too. I follow the goings on every year and have read Krakauer multiple times. I have this weird fascination/disgust with people who climb it and very mixed feelings about it. I know WAY more about the climb (and the base camp trek) than a middle-aged, kinda out-of-shape woman has a right to. 😆 We'd have SO much to talk about - Beck Weathers' story could keep me occupied for hours. -Kristine
