How to Perfectly Wrap Around a Door Handle | Tech On The Road | Arlon Graphics

In this Tech on the Road, Cal James shows us how to wrap around a door handle perfectly when you have to leave the door handles on! We've listed out what you'll need or this technique and the benefits below.
Here's what you'll need:
- 2 Sheets of printer paper
- 1 Sheet of colored paper (any dark color)
- Pencil
- Ruler
- YelloTools Speed Mags
- YelloTools Wrapstick
- Heat gun
- Blade
- Squeegee
- Masking Tape
- Scanner
- Adobe Illustrator or preferred program
- Plotter
The Benefits of this Technique
- Perfect for repeat fleet jobs where it is not appropriate to remove the door handles.
- A small amount of time invested on the first job means massive time savings gained on multiple repeat jobs.
- No need for trimming around door handles, so no risk of damaging paintwork.
- No need for massive heating and stretching around the handles, to try and get the door cup to be fully covered - No stretching means no shrinking or popping out.
- No stretching also means no distortion of printed lines, shapes, colors, or text.
- Consistency across all of your fleet jobs - the patch is neat and tidy, and everyone will look the same. This patch will never look like an afterthought!
- Once the positioning of your handles is established in your design, there is no longer any need to measure or dry-fit panels - peel the backing liner, and start wrapping! The handles become your registration points.

I don’t understand why you bother with this? Wouldn’t it be 100% easier to just remove the door handles...

Great point Jamie! Yes if the handle is removed then wrapping into the door cup is of course much easier. This technique here is specifically for when you don't have the option of removing the handle. Once you have templated around the handle, you never have to do it again. For commercial style wraps, this technique can save you massive amounts of time while guaranteeing the exact same result on every vehicle! We'll work on clarifying this in our next video!

I liked the transfer technique using the squeegee as an offset and then transferring the layout using the inside of the squeegee marks. I've done that in my life but it was in a shipyard with ¼ steel, way bigger and my tool was a victor Journeyman torch. ;-). Somebody from Arlon sent me some test samples of SLX cast and SLX +. Nice execution, but not realistic in the real world, for a training video, yes. You can't charge enough for that. For fleet vehicles maybe.

Hi David, yes it is definitely for fleet or repeat work! But we see where it can be confusing in this video! We can assure you it is very beneficial in the real world.

Wow, short of it being an awesome solution you made an easy job with one cut and some small amount stretching the lower cut and tucking the other over it into a massive task. If a client doesn’t want handles removed, then they are not paying the money they should so why go to the this effort and cost yourself money and time.

Hi Dorzun, yes if you have a client with one car who doesn’t want the handles removed, then it is certainly not worth going to this effort. If you have a client with 60 cars they need wrapped, then we would highly recommend investing the time in the beginning to save massive amounts of time in the long run.
