Great information and great content. You might have covered this already…what if you don’t perform for children’s parties and there is a table full of kids. Some people say perform for them and so you perform for them. However then one of the parents comes up and says hey little Johnny has a birthday next week. In the past I would politely decline and refer another magician in the area. I did this successfully many times and one time a parent got upset that I wouldn’t perform for his little Johnny. Any suggestions.

Great question! I would simply explain to them that the type of magic you focus on is mainly for adults and you would feel bad if they hired you and you were not able to properly deliver on their expectations. Having said that, you could also take some time to see what effects you already know that could work for the kids. Maybe use pokemon cards instead of a standard deck. Spongeballs work great. 90% of performing for children is repetition and games. You are not trying to fool them. They already believe! You just need to have fun with them. Let them heckle you. Allow them to participate, shout things out, play. A simple spongeball routine can be 10 minutes long with good byplay with the kids. So in short, I’d see if you can have something for them if this ever comes up again. If you really do not feel comfortable, just explain in detail why to the parent so they don’t feel like you are blowing them off. A good example would be hiring an electrician. Then explaining your kitchen sink is leaking. They wont want to fix the sink because it is outside their specialty. They would refer a plumber instead. Same situation for magic.

Thanks for the advice. If you're only doing small slots at each table, how do you fill 3 hours? Is there a lot of dead time?

It depends on the size of the restaurant. A fully packed restaurant with 20+ tables will keep you busy. Slower nights with only 10 or so tables will leave you with some time in between to chill till more patrons arrive.

Kind of related but once you start getting strolling gigs and then they book you for a magic show + strolling. Which one goes first lol, do you perform your magic show then announce you’re going to walk around?

Illusions for the Blind honestly it depends on what the client wants and the type of event. Sometimes I’ll do a show then mingle afterwards and othertimes I’ll mingle then do the show. Ask the client what their schedule looks like and plan around that. Usually there is some sort of cocktail hour where people are arriving then you will do a dinner show or something like that. It all depends. Great question!
