So useful, having just bought a larch forest from you! I’ve watched all the larch videos that you’ve done and I feel much more confident with the trees now! Can’t wait for my intro course in June ♥️

Great video Corin. Really enjoying what your posting. Also really loved seeing this tree. I bought your father's book (still have it) when I first started nearly 30 years ago. Great to see it is doing so well.

Nice to see how the larch has progressed and fattened up. Your dad‘s book was the first I ever owned is still a good reference after all these years.

So fascinating to now see the trees i had my earliest bonsai influences from, via the Pocket Encyclopedia by Harry Tomlinson being the first Bonsai book i had, more than a decade ago.

Thank you for you video! It shows well that we should not be afraid of straight (formal) styles. It would be interesting to see this larch this spring. Larches is one of my favorites trees, i have about 30 pcs of them.

Many thanks for the videos Corin, I’d love to see how your fathers oak tree from the cover of the book is doing. It was that tree alone that started my fascination with bonsai, I’m probably not alone with that either... Many thanks again, and keep up the good content. Steve.

Perfect timing and kudos on remembering to tell folks time period when you were doing this work, so few other KZbinrs do that. I just began repotting and pruning my Japanese and American larch so it was good to see a professional at work. It would be helpful if you have additional larches to repot to do a video showing that. It is difficult to find information on how aggressive to go when pruning the roots during this process, and what I have read and seen seems to conflict. You just got a new subscriber and I hope to be a regular viewer.

Thanks, Larch are tough old things, and root pruning never seems to affect them, unless you do it too late it the spring once they are showing green, as they don't like that.

Corin, thanks for the quick feedback. It seems the problem I run into is some folks say repot when the buds swell, others say do it when the buds are swollen and turn a gold color, and others say once you see them turn green. I have even seen posts say vigorous young trees can be repotted even once the buds start to pop but before shoots extend and needles appear. Fortunately all mine are 2-3 year old seedlings and saplings, at any rate I’ll have my answer soon as the ones I just repotted had some green buds among the swollen ones.

Great video 😍 If I wanted to thread graft a larch can you use a donor tree or is it best to grow out some long lengths and bend though and round to use as the graft.
@corintomlinson6687
@corintomlinson6687 3 жыл бұрын
best to grow section out, as needle length / colour will be same as parent tree

@@corintomlinson6687 Thank you, once lockdowns eased a bit I think il get booked on for a 1 on 1 lesson. To get your opinion on the trees future. Quite a old larch that currently is in a windswept style.

I have 2 small larches and I wasn`t going to trim them at all this , to get them to fatten up the trunks. Is this the correct thing to do at this point?
@corintomlinson6687
@corintomlinson6687 3 жыл бұрын
yes, let them grow if you want them to thicken up, or even better, plant them in the ground

Fantastic tree, I remember that tree...yout father’s book was my first book about Bonsai 👍 I have a question, I bought an European Larch and 13 years later It has bark and a fine ramification but no cones. Do you know some trick or way to identify the flower buds before pruning season?Thank you!

you said you trim that tree twice a year.. how often should you trim a fast growing deciduous tree and what times of the year are best? Thanks for the video!

Trim as often as you need to to keep a good shape. Depending on if you are exhibiting the tree, or just growing it, or growing it on
