Many thanks for the video. Very helpful. As a Windows user, I can't believe this is the way to connect a network share. This is a good example of why the normal computer user doesn't want to switch to Linux. It is a mess.
@ronkierstead19 күн бұрын
Windows is generally doing all of this in the background, and you get pretty GUI images like "Map Network Drive" but then the error messages are so cryptic that even pros have trouble finding out why it fails with Windows. If you want to go even easier, you are going to love MacIntosh systems. :) PS: Try running "net use" at the windows command prompt as the logged in user. It will list all your mapped drives to the console.

Thanks for this guide! I've been working on rebuilding my Plex server all weekend with same issue as you trying to get the fstab lines right for my Synology shared drive. My biggest issue that I could not get past is spaces in my path, no matter what I tried to close the path I would get errors. I got around this by renaming my shared drive by removing the spaces but was still getting parsed errors. I came across your video and it fixed it!

I stumbled upon this video and I'm glad I did! My shares, while mounted and functional, the mount command was a bit different and it seemed like things lagged a bit. I followed these instructions and now my shares access seems so much faster and even restarting doesn't take a long time like it used to either. Great video!

The mount is owned by Root, and although you can read from the mount you can't write to the mount unless you make your sell root at which point it works fine.
@helpingninja8 ай бұрын
Well yes and no. NFS volumes are always root owned. But both samba shares and nfs ownership can be changed with chown or chmod.

@@helpingninja With reference to Fedora 39, the permissions on the mounted directories don't make any difference and change once the drives are mounted; to help everybody else with this problem I added the following line to /etc/fstab file: "//IP address of Samba Server/my-share /media/backup cifs uid=1000,gid=1000,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,noperm,credentials=/root/.credentials, 0 0" The uid and gid are your user account on your local machine not on the server which can be looked up using the "ld" command. No additional spaces other wise you get a error. The .credentials has the account details to use to log onto the samba server.

Really could use a right click “Mount on startup” option. I really want to like and promote Linux, but as long as they gatekeep with stuff like this it will never happen
@tutacatАй бұрын
Depends on your software what features it handles. The file manager doesn't have to do literally everything. Old ways can be simple and consistent, and will continue to be supported for many years.
@tutacatАй бұрын
if you want to do that you can use other software. For example file manager does file reading, defined mounts, and usually udisks for existing partitions. you can also mount network shares through most file managers, but again that wouldn't necessarily be permanent depending on the file manager and what settings it has.

Could be, but I doubt it. Check if you have ntfs-3g package installed. The error while mounting should give you some pointers.

Hi, I did everything in the video but it gives me this output: mount error: Server abruptly closed the connection. This can happen if the server does not support the SMB version you are trying to use. The default SMB version recently changed from SMB1 to SMB2.1 and above. Try mounting with vers=1.0. mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)

hello. i tried this method, but i didn't get far. when i said SUDO MOUNT -A, i got an error saying that /mnt/data doesn't exist. so i tried /media/data, with the same result. so i tried to create such a folder, only to be told that permission was denied. so i have some questions: - where should i mount the NAS folder? since the NAS is not an internal HD in my PC, i'm guessing /media would be a good place. - how do i set the permissions for a folder so that i can create other folders inside? - what do i need to do on the NAS to make sure i can access it using NFS?
@helpingninja11 ай бұрын
Hi there. For the first question you already provided the answer - if the forldere doesn't exist you need to create one. It does'nt really matter if it's in the /mnt or /media folder. Those are both good places, but actually you can mount it anywhere. I personally prefer to mount removable devices to /media. Everything else (like network shares) to /mnt. Question about the permission isn't that simple. I recommend to read/watch a tutorial on linux permissions. On the NAS you nead to enable NFS protocol and specify from which networks it will be available (like 10.0.0.0/24 for example).

The username and password in smbcredentials, is it the password and user of the NAS user or the Linux user on the client side?
@helpingninja27 күн бұрын
it's the samba credentials for samba user on the NAS.

@@helpingninja Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate you helping me out. Just started with Linux about a week ago. You mean I need to log into the console as root? I start with "sudo -i"? I didn't see that command in your video. I saw you started with "pwd", why?

@@ChaimKutoff sorry for the late reply. "pwd" just prints your working directory - the place where you're currently standing. i doesn't do anything else.
