My first 2 years of high school I had issues of procrastinating homework. I would get home, throw my stuff down, and start either playing games or watching youtube. Now, my junior year, I tell myself that I cannot eat dinner until I finish my homework. So I start my homework now as soon as I get home. I've found myself having lots more time to do whatever it is I want to do. Also, my grades are showing it.

I left facebook since last week and its been like 5 days since I haven't opened it. I notice significant improvement in my productivity as I only check email and youtube minus Facebook. I also notice my time spent on YT has decreased as well. It seems I start do the task quicker than I have been before. Small change, big effect.
@MidlifeRenaissanceMan8 жыл бұрын
I just did effectively two weeks off mainstream media, alt media and social media, Sort of a _spring clean for the soul_ as it is here in the southern hemisphere. Other than music and guitar related stuff, there was no social media, no podcasts, and certainly no tv, commercial radio or news papers and I limited KZbin to specific stuff I was trying to achieve. Major improvement in getting stuff done, and I'm measurablly happier too
@sexybeast77288 жыл бұрын
you don't have to stop surfing on facebook entirely. It's okay if you don't want to, but don't withold yourself of any kind of joy just to make things done, you will be more efficient, but believe me that will make you unhappy. The point is to not overdo it and not to entirely cut off things you love to do from your life to stop yourself from procrastination
@Evija30008 жыл бұрын
+Sexy Beast But Chris said that being off media made him happier. When I went off it I found that true as well. Getting things done makes you feel better about yourself and not seeing the negativity of the news or the bragging of your acquaintances also has an uplifting effect. Although I agree that 15-30 mins of facebook or YT won't harm, as long as it has a purpose (like connecting with your friends) and doesn't wind up being destructive.
@sexybeast77288 жыл бұрын
Evija3000 as i said, if that makes you happier go with that lifestyle. My point is that you shouldn't intentionally not enjoying something because it's not 'right', even tho you want it badly
@Evija30008 жыл бұрын
Sexy Beast I could argue you. Saying no to something rises will power and can have many benefits. If that joy you mentioned previously can have negative consequences which bring stress and unhappiness, I don't think it's worth it. I think we both agree that a balance between entertainment and responsibility is the best way in most cases. But there are some cases, like when something has become an addiction, when saying no completely is the better option. Like, if someone has a drinking problem, it's best that they don't drink at all, because one drink could easily lead to many others. For some people, sometimes me including, it's similar with internet entertainment. If you watch one video, you'll likely watch a bunch of others and forget to do something important or waste all evening in one unproductive place. It's easier to not start watching at all. Well, at least that's one reason why some people decide to abandon these things completely for a while. I get what you mean though, moderation is the best option most of the time :D

Hey Charlie! I've always struggled with procrastination and I think it's even deeper than that, on an emotional and mental level dealing with anxiety or paranoia, but anyway -- This video made me think of another topic you could talk about: prioritizing and/or organizing. What happens with me is (and I'm probably going to answer my own question here), I do easier, less complicated and probably less important tasks first that end up taking more time and energy than I expected and then I can no longer do anything else that day. Classic example is when you start cleaning your room, which leads into cleaning your kitchen, or finally organizing your desk (like you've been wanting to) but then you don't file your taxes like you really should have because of the deadline. Sorry, I know this probably isn't the place to say all this, but I still think a video on prioritizing would be a great topic. Oh and your smile is amazing :) Thanks for reading!

Hey, this is great. I'm in a middle of refurbishment of my house, and all of my projects are on hold so I was "involuntarily" procrastinating with excuse that I'll continue once I finish it all. I fell for the mindset of..."oh there is so much to do to continue my project, there is no possible way I could do it during this phase with contractors hijacking my house." So I was putting it off until I saw your video. It just "razor-sharply" cut through my BS story. I got up, went to my boxes and took books I needed and brought them to my "little piece of heaven" uninhabited with contractors. I also made schedule for next days with a little chunks I CAN do easily during these horribly stressful days. And that's it for tonight. It took me literally 15 minutes. I feel much more powerful, and satisfied. Even the workers do not bother me so much anymore. Thank you so much man!!!

I love this, and what you said about setting small, do-able goals is so true! After my first baby, I wanted to get back into the habit of exercising. Forcing myself to go to the gym, or run around outside for even 30 minutes would not have kept me consistent, so I actually set a goal to exercise for 3 minutes a day. For a good long while, 5 minutes was the max I was doing, but I kept it up every single day, because it was so easy. Months later, that stretched to 10 minutes, etc, etc, etc, and these days I love working out. ...Okay and now I'll get off of here to do the other stuff I'm procrastinating!

For me it's 2:12. If the reason you don't want to sleep is that you're not tired, perhaps you could try a sleep meditation, trust me! It really works! I've never been able to be hypnotised or anything like that and this works for me! Our could even listen to one that's kind of like a story so if you don't want to sleep because it's boring we can make it fun! Alright hoped this helped, I'm gonna sleep now. Oh, and could you reply to this so if I didn't sleep after typing this I'll feel guilty, thus motivating me to sleep now? Thanks.

Came back to share my experience and hopefully help someone. - I've been doing daily goals for a few weeks now. My biggest issue has been lack of willpower to actually do the thing. The thing about willpower is - you don't expand it, when you do things you already have incentive to do. To me and many others, willpower is trained by doing things you should, even if you're reluctant to. What seems to be working for me, is disrupting the negative thought pattern (humming and eye-movement exercise). Charlie has a great video on this aswell! Followed by doing the thing anyway. Eg. with my running it's mostly "Shit it's raining, cold and windy outside, fuck no I'm not going". I disrupt the pattern and go on the run anyway. This has truly worked for me, in increasing my willpower for daily goals. When I'm done I always feel more satisfied, than if it's a beautiful day and going on a run doesn't seem so hard. Also might be good to set a daily goal "to set daily goals", I forgot this at first, has really helped me doing the things I was truly procrastinating... xD

This is the exact thing I needed to hear today! I'm subscribed to a bunch of different channels on social skills and self-help, but honestly, I think you take the cake as being the best one. You're legitimately helpful and you describe your methods in clear ways that are a lot more relate-able. Other channels, such as Alpha M, are inspiring and give good advice, but I feel like there's a lot of different factors being ignored that you often address. (The analysis videos are A+ as well!) Thanks and keep it up!

Protip for writers: 500 words a day is very minimal if you're writing a novel. It can be done in 20-60 minutes depending on how motivated you are, but once you hit that threshold, you get into a groove and usually end up wanting to write more.

I agree. Practice is just as important or probably more important than just knowledge. For some another procrastination block is also fear. And we come up with many excuses and other things to do besides doing the thing we actually need to do. I would like to see a video that covers fears and confronting them. That's my current largest inner conflict Specifically fear with confidence. It's paralyzing and making me in congruent with my behavior. Great video.

I'll add up one more. I sometimes find that I am avoiding a task becouse I don't remember it's place on the bigger picture. My solution is giving it meaning, thinking on why I do it for. Fast example: I start not feeling like exercising today. Then I force myself to remember how energized I feel afterwards, or how much I enjoy having a good outlook. It usually works. When it's not this problem, I'm usually falling in the "overwhelmed" feeling you covered in the video.

How to stop it? (a) long term: daily routine (like you said). Build habits and daily routines like: work 9 to 5, afterwards meeting up with friends on monday, on tuesdays hitting the gym for about 2 hours. or (b) short term: Putting (psychological) pressure on yourself 1) why you should do something now, what it would bring/give you and why it would give you massive pain if you didn't follow through. 2) put a time frame/schedule/deadline up: I'll be working on (whatever you have/want to do) for the next 2 hours, after that I'll be having a break for half an hour, then I'll continue (chunk it!)
@adonis95033 жыл бұрын
1. Lack of Clarity. Set a concrete daily deadline. 2. Overwhelm. Make it smaller , more feasible. Just start to do it and you'll be getting it done in no time. 3. Incentivize Yourself Give yourself gratification once you get your stuff done. 4. Make sure your habits are action based.

Good timing on this video. I had a meeting scheduled about preventing procrastination just the other day but unfortunately I had to cancel until next week.

Thank you. This honestly really helped and have given me a bit more confidence in my skills.I'm very sick right now. It's 1am. However, I'll go do some push-ups and respond to some messages I've been postponing.

This video is great. Simple, practical, easy, well made. I really like it and made notes. It kept me here after skipping many other videos on the topic. I feel like my notes from this will help me out. Thanks.

Sure helps a lot. I'm the kind of the person who sets a whole lot of goals for the day and ending up never having done anything, sometimes I scratch 1 or 2 off the list. But my mistake was the goals weren't simple. So thanks for these tips.

This is one of the most useful of your many terrific videos. I’ve used strategies like these in my career for decades and have recommended them to countless students. They definitely work, especially the “tiny habits” tactic. Thanks for the care and effort you put into these videos. They’re a delight to watch and packed with invaluable suggestions.

Talking about procrastination, I've been struggling with mine for the last 10 years and read countless books and self help methods. Here is what I'm having best results with. First of all, procrastination bulldozer method has worked wonders for me. I highly recommend you apply it. Secondly, whenever you have a task that takes less than 5 minutes to do, do it right away. No delays. I'm really starting to take control of my life now. )

Hi Charlie! I don't usually post comments on youtube videos, but I am finding your channel so interesting that here I am! I have to say that your celebrity analysis are really great, they really help explain why people are so drawn to those public figures. So, wanting to see more, I decided to drop here a few names... I don't know if they actually check the boxes on charisma or any other quality in a new way, but here I leave them because I enjoy their work and the way they come across in interviews: Emma Stone, Chris Pratt, Hugh Jackman, Anthony Mackie, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Justin Timberlake, Paul Rudd... Those are all I can remember for the moment and most of them are related to comedy. That's obviously a very important part in making an impression :)
