I let the cat smell my fingers first, it usually automatically rub their cheek or neck at my hand, asking (allow you) for more rubbing/petting.

I just grab onto the scruff of its neck nice and hard and then pick it up and swing it around a little. Then I usually stick its head in my armpit because the darkness calms them down. They also have very sensitive nerve endings on their back by their tail, only certain cat's like being petted there. If you pet your cat there and they sort of wig out or start making weird faces then don't pet them there because they can barely stand it. Not all cats though some like it. Never pet their stomachs unless you know they like it either. It really all depends on the cat.
