Peter Hook is a bassist who shined like a lead guitarist with his menorable bass melodies. Such a unique musician with a distinct and original sound. Fun fact: According to Peter Hook, he began to play high up the fret of his bass guitar in the early days (not due to stylistic choice) but simply because he had crap equipment, and he wouldn't have been heard otherwise. He also mentioned that Ian Curtis liked the sound of it.

I've also heard that Ian Curtis was the one who encouraged Hooky to use the bass as lead instrument because he didn't want to carry the band's sound with his vocals. That could explain why much of the band's output is built around Hooky's basslines.
