Outstanding. What you described is the experience of flow. You shift from "I am the photographer and you are the subject" to where you feel that you are part of the experience which has a life of its own. As far as gratis is concerned, my take is that if I request the photo, it's free. If they request the photo, they pay.

Capturing who they are. In the beginning I couldn't understand why people like the portraits that I thought were blah. Turns out what they liked was the emotion, the action, the essence of them captured.
