Very nice video. Leaving the tripod at home is good advice. One year I went and I was stuck in a blind with two other photographers and they were both using tripods, I couldn’t move around the blind like I wanted. I miss the days when you could call up the captain in April and book a trip for June, since the pandemic those days are over, it’s gotten too popular. My first trip out there in 1989 cost 80 bucks, those days are over too. The Downeast area of Maine is a beautiful part of the state and there are many photo opportunities once you get back from your puffin trip.

I couldn’t imagine fitting two tripods in those blinds comfortably. Yup, nothings cheap nowadays, with that said I’d happily pay for the experience again haha. Not sure yet if I’ll book this year or take that 250 and plan another wildlife trip up north. And agreed, downeast is beautiful. I didn’t add it to this video but we stayed over at a beachside home in the Roque Bluffs State Park neighborhood. Got some great shots of a beaver swimming in Simpson Pond during sunset, will save that footage/story for a rainy day. Thanks for watching John glad you liked it

@@liamdmcinerney I’d pay the 250 bucks also to go again but probably won’t. I kept going back because my camera gear kept getting better. The first few times I went I was shooting with film and manual focus lenses. Oh, how times have changed.

I have spent most of my life walking, working, and living in or near the woods and mountains. When I moved down towards the coast here, I took a job sailing on schooners and even purchased my own boat that I owned for a while. But it was not untill I took a Puffin tour that I realised they could fly. (but of course). They remind me of footballs going through the air

Haha that’s a great story, Bob. You probably thought that because they are so dang tough to photograph in the air. Footballs is another good analogy, for some reason I always pictured them being larger than they are.

That part of the Maine coast is so beautiful and there’s so much wildlife to see. I was lucky enough to go on a Bold Coast Charter Company tour and it was unbelievable, even for a novice photographer! You got some amazing photos! Thanks for sharing

How about a print of our own shot, with the tips from your videos 😊 so we can hang our work up, instead of someone else's 😊 we would of course have to send you the highest resolution jpg of the shot, not just the social media resolution. And maybe the raw too, if you wanted it 😊

This was really helpful. I am wavering between wanting to go to Elliston Island up in Newfoundland or Machias.

You can't go wrong either way! Not sure how to works on Elliston Island, but keep in mind a landing on Machias Seal Island is never guaranteed. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Wow! Thanks for this video! I've been meaning to get to Machias for years, and finally last week I took Tuesday off and tried to book a trip. Holy Cow! They sold out in about a half hour! I ended up getting a spot on August 15 and was worried that it might be a little late in the season (the trips end on the 19th). Did you bring only the 200 - 600, or the 70 - 200 as well? I'd like to bring a short zoom and a long zoom, but not sure if I should bring that much gear into the blind. Is there room for a backpack? I haven't been Downeast for nearly 20 years, so I'm looking forward to this trip.

Hey Rick, thanks for watching! And yup, they go fast but I'm glad you got a date! So I brought my 24-70 (for vlogging purposes), the 70-200, and the 200-600. I shot predominantly with the 200-600 but in future trips to the island I will definitely use the 70-200 to capture "wider" shots. You will have no issue bringing a backpack so bring both your short and long zoom lenses. Some of the photographers I was paired with had dual setups of mid range zoom and long telephoto. Enjoy the trip but also enjoy Downeast! I didnt book a trip this year since I am planning a few other trips up north, so please let me know how it goes!

Thanks again for the great info! I haven't been Downeast for about 20 years. It was so foggy that I couldn't see the West Quoddy Light from the parking lot (heard the fog horn, though). I stayed in Lubec where there were only two places to eat, and one of them had a billboard that said "Eat Here or We'll Both Starve". Excited to see how it is these days.
