With the camera being off centre to the axis of rotation anything close to the camera will move in relation to the background, causing a problem for the stitching software. You may consider pointing this out in any future videos you make on the subject. Rotating around the lens nodal point will eliminate the problem. I enjoy all your videos particularly on fine art so please don't take this as criticism as your method works fine most of the time. Keep up the good work. Kind regards, Alec Cowley

@PinataOblongata
@PinataOblongata 5 жыл бұрын
What I was thinking. Not great having the camera hanging off the pan tilt/head tilted all the way over like that, even shooting a far-away subject (but especially if you want some foreground). Everything you can do to make it easier for your software to stitch will give a better result. I made a pano head out of two steel shelving brackets and two pieces of mdf with a t-nut for a swivel, and put a quick-release shoe on horizontal arm - the most budget option and works perfectly to eliminate parallax. There are some cheap options on ebay and such, too.

@@PinataOblongata I also thought of this problem. But it may be no problem any longer if software can deal with it. So, the choice is: to "help" sofyware, i.e. save a couple of seconds of your PC machine time or get rid of extra hardware on your tour ( that is as more noticeable as the longer trip you take). I choose the second option, provided that software can stitch framer really seamlessly.

Great video, this is certainly an easy and accessible way to do panoramic photography. Have you ever tried using a view camera with a digital camera adapter to do panoramas? With an adapter plate, you can use your digital camera as a back on an old 4x5, which allows you to make panoramas, and other large images without your lens moving, which removes all the image warping and distortion that comes from moving the lens. Anyway, very informative video!

@@GaryGough Here's a tutorial on using the adapter from the manufacturer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naCUqJ6EasSAatk They don't go into much detail on what using the adapter allows you to do, I've seen better videos from 3rd parties, I just wasn't able to find one this morning. Basically, by leaving your large format lens stationary, and only moving your camera back and forth to take the photos, you give yourself a single image plane for all the photos, thus eliminating the way the foreground of stitched images often appears to bend further away from the camera, when in real life it runs parallel. In my opinion this creates a more pleasing photograph than rotating the camera does, since it looks just like a large, single image, rather than many stitched ones. Using a large format camera and lens also allows you to do all the cool focus and image trickery large format movements can do, such as image shift, swing, and tilt. An expensive 4x5 like the linhof demonstrated in that video is also not required, the only necessary feature the camera must have is a graflok back. When I was searching for a camera with it, the cheapest one I found was the Graflex Graphic View II, which can be had for under $200 on ebay, sometimes even with a lens included. If you are any good at DIY type stuff, I've also seen people make adapters like the one in the video themselves, which can allow you to take even larger images on 5x7 and even 8x10 cameras. The price of camera equipment does go up quite quickly as you get into larger formats however, and when you're shooting that large, I would say it is simpler just to shoot film and then have it scanned or traditionally printed. Anyway, there's plenty more information out there on this technique if you're interested. I personally am not the most knowledgeable, as I prefer to just shoot film when I want high resolution, rather than stitch together digital images. Best of luck with your photography!

Good stuff Gary... Excellent tutorial, you stressed the all importance of getting that camera dead level across the ENTIRE sweep of the camera. I think you did touch on the use of a leveler under the tripod head, i.e. ball head/pan head earlier on too. The use of my leveler is a constant, pano's or single shots. Your chosen style of focusing is also very accurate. All (3) of my Canon cameras are set up for back button focusing, therefor my remote switch nor camera body shutter button NEVER make micro focus adj's when sweeping across for panoramas or single shots. ( this eliminates the need for setting manual focus on the lens )... Bottom line, your images come out stunning because you stick to your system consistently and clearly it works! William Farr Cheers Bill. Spot on re the back button focus. I’m not a fan though. I totally understand it’s positive uses but I’m just not comfortable with it. Just a personal thing. Cheers again Bill 👍🏻👍🏻

awesome video - really clear set of steps - so important to level the tripod!!! one thing i do is once I have set my base exposure I tend to do a quick sweep and watch the histogram to check there is no clipping at any point as often each shot has a slightly different exposure :-)

NODAL POINTS & PARALLAX - A lot of people are making assumptions that I failed to mention how important Parallax and Nodal points are... Well, THEY AREN'T for 99.9% of the time!!! I have never taken a Pano that didn’t stitch together effortlessly. Also to note, software has come on leaps and bounds. Just think about this though... Panoramas are usually distant objects. Subjects that are normally a mile or miles away from your camera. Do you honestly believe that tilting a tripod head an inch or two off centre will REALLY make that much of difference? WELL IT DOESN'T AND PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING! When I shoot Panos handheld I turn my body around like a lighthouse, and guess what, It's always perfect! :) Examples can be found on KZbin that demonstrates why it's necessary to find the nodal point of your camera lens, but that's simply because the fingers being held up are a matter of inches away from the camera. Take the same 2 fingers and move them a mile away from the camera, now how much distortion is there? Nodal points and Parallax are important but only if subjects are really close to the camera, like a statue for instance. Don't be that person that regurgitates nonsense found on KZbin! Gary
