this is very simple and useful. I'm getting better at the actual modelling, but my photos are always a bit crappy. Amazing what a second lamp and some white paper can do, and you don't even need an expensive photomachine, even a decent smartphone can do nicely. Also, the most important thing you must resist if you want to improve your pictures: DON'T EVER USE FLASH. It has a tendency to bring out the mistakes you can't even see with your own eyes.

Oh boy! A very simple technique to give my models a good quality during a photoshoot, thanks to you! I might try that later for my mini photoshoot of my mustang soon!

Good tips! I agree, the better the light the better the photo. I have never tried the tracing paper so I will do that on my next photos. I use daylight type bulbs and that seems to help eliminate the yellow tint of incandescent bulbs. Thanks for the tips! they were very helpful.

I was particularly interested in the last photo of the Mustang in a diorama setting. Like you, I strive to make dioramas as realistic as possible. I made two Airfix Vickers Valiant's in the white anti-flash colour scheme and set them in an airfield diorama with a few RAF ground crew around them. When I showed the photo's of the scene to my brother he asked "are they models or the real thing"? My brother worked as ground maintenance crew on Valiant's for five years whist in the RAF, so I knew I must have done a good job of it! By the way-the Airfix Valiant is an excellent kit and produces a very realistic model. Another thing I have learnt over the years is that white model paint soon goes yellowy, so I did what I do with all my white-topped airliner models ( this may sound a bit crude but believe me it yields good long-lasting results) which is to apply a couple of coats of Crown brilliant white satin paint, gently rubbing down between coats instead of using white model paint. Many modellers photograph their aircraft dioramas from above, and for me this straightaway negates the realism they are seeking-if you are looking at static aircraft at an air show you are not several metres in the air! keep the lens at ground level.

Great video Owen, many thanks for sharing these very useful tips. I was quite surprised that the results of the Mobile Phone were so good, but I suppose the benefit of the DSLR is the flexibility it brings and when you just need that little extra quality, it delivers. For most of us though the images from the phone would be good enough. Many thanks and have fun mate, Joe

Yup I agree, I tried to show that there's no reason to buy a DSLR specially when with a few lights you can take something almost as good. I'm glad you found the video useful :)

Hi Owen, I think you should build the Tamiya Tiger 1. I want to build it but I want to hear your opinion on it. I've seen people build it on KZbin, but they all airbrush it. I want to see brush painted results.

thanks for the tips ; I also find using a small tripod helps ; I have a Sony one I paid less than £10 ; though it won't fit phones > the Microsoft 950 phone has an excellent camera and was selling for £250 ; though I don't think it is available anymore . It's great for sending pictures on WhatsApp to my friend in Germany . Your correct lighting and angles are probably the most important things in photography .

I am a total noob. I can't afford an airbrush, tho, but I have bought a Revell 1:32 04665 BF 109. Is there a step by step guide? I want it to be realistic as possible although it's my first one, because it will probably be my last one. Would be great to get an response. Owen, you earned a subscriber btw

You've started with a yourself off with a very difficult kit!! Not only is the construction complex, but the paint scheme with the mottling will also be very difficult. My advice would be save it for later, buy a couple of cheap 1:72 scale planes and practice on them first, then build that. Don't have too high expectations of your first kit - look at my scale model collection video

Ik I am late, I was paint brushing scale models for more than 1 and a half year until I changed to my Sparmax airbrush, but I mostly build 1/72 aircrafts that were pretty cheap. But if you can afford a 1/32 scale aircraft, I don't see how you could not afford an decent airbrush, Sparmax and Tamiya do Very high-quality airbrushes that are under 100$... And for air compressor, you can find them for 30$ (the small ones) or if you want to go full budget, get an air pump, and pump the air yourself (I already have done it so it's durable and quite good).
