Great tips Raphael! Didn't know the trick to double-tapp the time bar (1:15) to arrive at the current date. Nice! One question I can't find the answer to on any forum - how high above the horizon will Jupiter & Saturn appear after sunset and deeper into blue hour? I know this will change from day to day - I am looking for Friday 18 Dec when skies are forecast to be clear here. I have my location selected, but want to be sure it will be above my subject - a local illuminated bridge. Cheers and thanks. Frederic in Montréal
@PhotoPills4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frederic, unfortunately we don't include planets at the moment. You can't miss them, look for the brightes spot int he sky (Jupiter) in the south-west direction. As it gets darker and darker, Jupiter and Saturn will go down and down till they set.
@sebfalk19804 жыл бұрын
It might be a bit late, but Stellarium is a great app (mobile or desktop) to track the motions of the stars and planets for any location or date. You can easily find the altitudes and rising/setting times there.

@@PhotoPills Muchas gracias Raphael! Sorry for the late response. I did finally see the conjunction in the sky, but honestly, the two pinpricks of light were, and the media hype about it, was not as interesting nor as bright as when Mars was in opposition at its closest approach to Earth this past fall. Now THAT was excellent, and I got some great shots! (soon to be posted on my IG account at instagram.com/frederic_hore/ ) Love your app - just amazing! Adios! from Montréal :-)

I shot it last night (18 Dec). There is still enough distance between them to clearly see that they are separate planets. I took the shot during astronomical twilight. I used 13 seconds, f/ 2.8 and ISO 100 on a 21mm lens and the exposure was good. In all likelihood, a "Nifty 50" would have been a better lens however; it would have provided enough foreground to give context but would have had more emphasis on the planets.

Hi Rafael, excellent video as usual...I have a question...I will photograph through a telescope and have been practicing...my first thought was shoot video and use Autostakkert or Registax to align the AVI frames, but my camera cannot remotely start and stop video (Sony A7 RII)...when I push the button on the camera to start and stop the shaking induced is off the charts, so no video...so next plan is to capture a bunch of stills, ok, not much of a problem here, but when I tried to stack the still in Deep Sky Tracker it doesn't see enough stars (there really aren't any as I exposed for the surface of Jupiter and took images from a heavy light polluted area) and since it couldn't find stars to align it did not align...can you or anyone recommend a post processing flow? Can a bunch of raw files be converted to AVI? If so I can probably go back to Autostakkert...maybe I just need to crop way down first and then try to stack in DSS? I have never done this and could use a pro tip...thanks in advance...
@PhotoPills4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed! Yes, the longer the focal length the more the shaking. If you use the app Remote Camera Control, you should be able to make videos and edit them with Autostakkert (best option). If this doesn't work, try to start a video and delete the part that's shaking before using the stacking software. Its weird that the DSS is not working, have you tried to load fewer images? Also, you can always try to do it in Photoshop: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKepaamqhNGHfNU&ab_channel=AstroBackyard

Thanks for another informative and helpful video! Regarding shooting with a telescope or large zoom lens, from my experience if you expose properly for Jupiter, then Saturn will be underexposed. After all, Saturn will be hundreds of millions of miles farther away, so the light will have to travel farther to reflect off Saturn and then get back to us on Earth. The only way around this will be to plan for two exposures -- one for Jupiter and one for Saturn -- and then combine them in post-processing.
@PhotoPills4 жыл бұрын
Nice! Thanks for the feedback 🤓
@jezrougan4 жыл бұрын
You are correct with needing to change exposure but you'll only need to change it by about 1.5 stops, you also need to adjust the focus for both planets because even though they are both close together from our perspective here on earth they are still a few hundred thousand miles apart... Personal I will be taking 4 exposures two for the planets and two for each of the planets moons, then blending them in post... Clear skies ✨

Great Raphael, thank you very much for the tutorial. Now , pl tell me how to transfer Whattsapp location stored n the mobile to planner. Often when we scout for nights-cape photograph, we store the location which we identified, as "current location " in Whattsapp sent to any friend as an easy way. But I don't know how to bring this location information directly into Planner, so that it is easy for me to use the planner much easier. Ajayan
@PhotoPills4 жыл бұрын
Hi! You can also open the Planner, tap the GPS button and then tap Save > Point of Interest to save that location in PhotoPills. To bring the location to PhotoPills from Whatsapp you first need to export it to Google Maps, there's a button that allows to do it. Google Maps shows the coordinate (latitude and longitude). Open the PhotoPills' Planner, tap Load > Latitude/Longitude and use the coordinate from Google Maps.

I managed to observe the two planets yesterday on a the first clear night we got in weeks, with my binoculars and show Jupiter’s two moons. I am not hopeful for the next few days as the weather forecast is not good at all. However, I would like to recommend on the night AR feature to add the major planets like in most apps which you can observe the night sky. You could also toggle them on and off depending on what the user wants to see. Would that be possible? I do not expect to see every celestial body but major features like planets or even the ISS.

@@PhotoPills Que pena molestarte Rafa.

Shot the Moon Jupiter and Saturn this evening here in Japan. The batteries in my intervalometer died. I will have to new in the morning. Considering I did okay. I just wish I had a better foreground. If I had the time, I would have liked to go East to have Mt Fuji in the foreground, but that is not going to happen. I could fake the shot but will not. Too bad that this event does not occur with different timing. As I face South, oh well. About the only good foreground I have here is phonelines. Then again, this is Japan.
