I took a few videos of the moon for the first time today using my telescope and I was wondering why it was so bright, but this video has answered my question. Today's moon phase is "WAXING GIBBOUS" which means that 90% of the moon is visible. For a better picture, I will need to wait for a third quarter moon phase! Thanks for the video!

A very nice video, you gave us a lot of information... I have a Mead 2040 4 inch SC. Could I use this to photograph something like Saturn or Jupiter? I know it would be small in the frame but to be able to see Saturn's rings or Jupiter's moons and get a picture of it will be fun. Would this type of photography work for a situation like that? I know from photography a lot of times a not so good picture is better than no picture at all....

Very enjoyable video to watch and GREAT image of the Moon from your phone. First time I tried this was in 2013 and I used Samsung Galaxy Ace and wasn't expecting good shots and I saw my results and they were good from a camera that was 5MP. I must say I love doing smartphone astrophotography after that time and I own the amazing Pixel 4 smartphone that has had so much hype because of its astrophotography mode. Sadly I've not tested it under dark skies due to covid-19 pandemic. I've used it under Bortle 6 skies. I've decided to do my astrophotography in the highlands of Scotland as many places there have dark skies locations because I'm fed up with light pollution here. I also own the Hauwei p20 and p20 pro as both are great in low light. Have you thought about getting the Pixel 4? Doing the Moon first is a good step and I've seen deep sky objects with a smartphone that would be nice. Thanks for sharing and stay safe!!!

@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 3 жыл бұрын
On my iPhone when I tap on right on the moon on the screen, it adjusts the focus and brightness so the moon looks good. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest having a backup camera app ready that allows you to adjust the exposure manually. NightCap app is one I've used.

Coo video. What I noticed with my very cheap telescope ($50 one) that the phone pics up the image in circular form as you would see with the naked eye when looking through it, so for example in the day time you get a black square with the rounded image in the middle. Is there any method of being able to get rid of the circular effect, i.e. getting a more square image (essentially trimming the the circle to form a square. Do you need better equipment to achieve that? or the nature of a how a telescope works will always mean the same outcome?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 жыл бұрын
That is normal for this technique, and it is a combination of how wide angle the lens on your phone is AND the nature of the eyepiece. With the telescope, phone and eyepiece I used there was circular vignetting, but I only really noticed it during daytime testing. If the vignetting is cutting in to the moon (or whatever you are shooting) the only recourse is to pick a different eyepiece. Bigger numbers in mm on the eyepiece will give you wider view and therefore less likely for the circular vignette to be a problem (you can simply crop it away).

Okay my friend I am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination however what I do once I get the moon into my camera is I switch it to manual mode then I adjust ISO to 50 and the shutter as necessary to get it into Focus. Because my phone would just give me a white blob with all that magnified Moonlight coming through am I doing something wrong I don't know but my results are pretty good let me know thanks a lot
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds right to me. All phone's camera software is a bit different so I just showed on the iPhone since it is one of the most popular smartphones, but if you have manual control over shutter and ISO you should be able to get even better results. Clear skies, Nico

@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos 4 жыл бұрын
A physical solution would be a minus violet filter, but those are expensive enough that you might be better off buying a cheap mirror-based scope. If you can edit your photos on a computer with GIMP or Photoshop: make a slightly fuzzy circular selection around the moon (excluding the blue/orange fringe), invert selection, fill with black. Hope this helps. I hope to get more in to editing lunar shots, but I am a bit behind on stuff now since my computer crashed.

Hi! I’m fairly new too and you may have found already, but there is a great app called SkyView which allows you to locate any planet/messier object/star as well as the ISS and human-made satellites (Hubble Telescope). You just need to type in the object you want and it’ll show you on your phone both its position and trajectory in the sky. A particularly cool feature is that it shows the time at which the object will be at a certain point in the sky: it’s very useful whenever you check during the day if planets will appear in the sky tonight! The app costs like 2 or 3€ and it’s been completely worth it for the year I’ve used it. There exists other apps like this such as Skysafari but they are for advanced astronomers and I find them much less beginner friendly. Anyway, hope I helped! Clear skies to you and your son :)

Can anyone help me please?! I used to take pics through my telescope with a Samsung Galaxy A71 and they looked pretty good. But my A71 gave up on me, so I switched to the Xiaomi 13T Pro, which is supposed to have a better camera. When I try to take pics through my telescope, they look great in the view finder, but once I take them, they look like crap. Planets have a weird blur on them with rainbow colours around and most of the detail is lost, the moon is really noisy, especially in the dark areas around etc... Keep in mind, they look good in live view before taking them. I really need help with this. Thanks!
