I first managed to get the exposure right on an entirely manual, inexpensive 35mm camera with no autofocus, no rangefinder and no exposure meter when I was about 15. I stared at that print for ages through a magnifying glass and was amazed. There was detail. Blurred but not a white blob and I could make out the seas. Magic!

I would do L JPEG and RAW, that way you can have the best of both worlds. A JPEG, ready to download and share, and the RAW footage to edit in Lightroom or some other program. It takes up more room, but memory is pretty cheap these days. @@ramelfrost134

You have covered the topic very well. One note I would add is, observe the moon through the camera and lens for a short while - minutes - and you will notice a shimmer over the surface of the moon from time to time. It is actually our atmosphere which becomes unstable for a short time. After a while, you can pick the quiet times (no shimmer), so target the photo in that time. This will give the shooter the best results, especially at higher magnifications. Another aside, shoot the moon higher in the sky - less atmosphere to shoot through. Clear skies.

Other tips: Use a polarizing or moon filter to cut glare. If your camera has a mirror, lock the mirror up to minimize camera shake. Quarter moon or crescent moon pictures can be better than full moon pictures since the sun is shining at it from the side causing shadows from the crater ridges giving more detail to your photos.

Watched this, got my tripod out and camera all set up, but the moon is like literally directly overhead. I could maybe get the tripod to work, but then I couldn't see the screen or my viewfinder. I'd have to be lying down, practically. Cannot wait to try this when the moon is more cooperative! Thanks for such a simple and understandable tutorial.

Well, I had high hopes. But these settings didn't really work for me. I only have a 70-200mm on my 5D Mark II, but the shots came out a little blurry and just not clear at all. Even in post I couldn't get them really clear like I wanted. Maybe the 200 is just not enough? Oh well. It's funny, with the same lens and camera just about a week ago I simply looked up and snapped a quick handheld near-sunset shot of the half moon and it came out great! Craters and all. I'll keep trying. I'm brand new to all of this.

I had so much fun with it starting onAutomatic setting , then graduating to taking manual photos and slides. I still have it but don’t even know if I can get film for it now. I have a couple of compact cameras and a Fugi Finepix bridge camera. Your explanations brought so many memories back. My best ever photo was of the Houses of Parliament at night, I didn’t have a tripod, I just rested it on the embankment wall and held my breath while counting to ten holding down the shutter. I like to use spot metering when photographing the moon. What metering mode do you recommend? Thank you
@paganphil1004 жыл бұрын
Alexa Claven: I use spot metering and I also under-expose by two or three stops (for a full moon).
@chriscorbin95654 жыл бұрын
If you can get close enough that the spot meter fits withing the moon then moving settings until the meter is in the middle in manual mode or no exp comp in a semi auto mode will give an 18% grey exposure of the moon. Any metering mode will do the job but the place on tge meter or exposure comp will be different for each.
@richardkemp41444 жыл бұрын
A full Moon is basically pretty much the same brilliance. You're in the ballpark with the settings suggested. You just bracket a few shots either side and you'll get a good picture. There's no need to meter at all. The only thing I'd add to this tutorial is to set the white balance to daylight rather than auto.

I also have a remote and a center sandbag. I shot at f.11 and, as I recall, ISO 100. I’ve tries various shutter speeds over time with my D40, D70 and now my D5100. I did extend the center column, though and I’m not sure is I always turned off VR. I with this new information that you have given me I feel that I will finally achieve success Thank you, Mate!.

Excellent video! I bought a Canon T7 last fall (Spring to you! ) and fairly recently bought the 75 to 300 mm Zoom. I was encouraged to see that you are using the same lens to photograph the Moon. The weather should be good tonight; as long as the Moon is clear of the trees, I should be able to get a good picture. I also have a 1,000 mm telescope which I'm going to use it sometime in the future. I have used that already with my old Fujifilm camera.

Hope you managed to get some good shots, unfortunately here in Brisbane the clouds spoilt our view! I've made another video about shooting the stars in the nigh sky, you may want to check that out next : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGiWoKF8pKmpjLc

I think it's important is locking up the mirror, my shots of the moon are using a 5DMk4 150-600 tamron and 2x converter, --- lock up the mirror and a trigger remote cable or radio I also put sand bags on my tripod

Thank you, Sir, for this very thorough and very well-explained “How To” video! You are an excellent teacher, in my humble opinion. I look forward to putting your directions into action and hope for a clear night this coming Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 so I can photograph the last Full Moon of 2020! Thanks, again and best wishes!
