Going all the way to Iowa from Pennsylvania to get our third GSP from a breeder that we’ve been trusting for years. Great to be back in the process again!

We just lost our GSP of 10 yrs, and now we are waiting for a new GSP puppy (we are looking at an Iowa breeder too). We want a TALL GSP for dockdogs. Our last one was awesome at everything, and would learn anything in minutes. We had so much fun doing dockdogs with him, and he placed third at worlds with my daughter as handler. I just feel shorted that our GSP died so early. He barely had a gray hair on his face. 😢

So true about breeders. We have a beautiful white English lab chosen to be a companion service dog for my husband the vet. My daughter with cerebral palsy has a black English lab in training to assist her with a walker and daily activities. We carefully chose our breeder and she was so helpful helping us to choose the correct puppy for our needs. For our puppy, she made a couple of suggestions after consulting with her trainer. One of the puppies she chose came directly to me when I sat down in the pile of puppies and he is our perfect “polar bear”. She chose a very smart puppy for my daughter who is an adult and has different needs. She stays in touch with us and sends potential clients to us for our recommendations since her dogs are mostly hunting and ours are in training for service animals. We truly value that relationship. On the other hand, we also rescue and foster basset hounds and have a 10 year old basset who rules the roost. I would love to have a GSH but I know they would not be right for our family…… so I just play with friends puppers. Thank you for all the videos since we learn from all of them.

oh GSP puppies are so cute! Their earnest faces, floppy ears, curiosity, and energy. I love the three at the 10:00 mark - so fun. Indeed, the breeding and breeders are so important. Thank you for sharing, with this video and the many others. Such great content and so helpful. Keep having fun at what you do.

I have gsps, well my family dose I have a border. My next dog will ov be a border child gsps do not fit me Do you know the best temperament for service dogs? I’m hopefully gonna get my new dog in the next few years to be one and maybe even my current, but I may not be able to do the ladder. I realy like border collies they just fit with me, done research about before getting my border and he’s perfect just maybe not for the purpose or a service dog. Any temperament recommendations? Edit they are gona be a self trained one. As in I’ll have someone helping me train but it’s still me training them
@jayscott13802 жыл бұрын
Pick the one that seems to have no personality. You know that one that keeps laying there in the back while all its litter mates are trying to get your attention by being active and trying to look cute. That one that doesn't care about you being there, that's the smart one.

You’re trying to choose the most intelligent dog? Is that more important to you than whether the dog is affectionate and loves people?
@jayscott1380 Жыл бұрын
@@EnjoyerofKZbin all dogs love people and are affectionate, if they are raised well and given a loving environment. I want the smartest most trainable dog, affection is a given. Too much affection towards people is actually something you have to train out of most dogs.

I've always been told that you should take your current dog with you when choosing a puppy, letting them pick out the puppy from the litter. The thinking behind this is your dog knows you and he knows what personality will best suit your house. Of course this is not always possible especially if you do your research and you want a rare bread that you have to fly in from across the country.

Hi Kat, Thank you very much for all your videos. They all answer so many questions I have. As a very young lad (11 years) I bred Labs but not at your level which is very educational. With only Dad's overall guidance and money. The yellow lab ('Tammy' with an excellent pedigree) was my dog. I now want a GSP which I am working on. With the awesome distance between us what are your views on artificial insemination. All the very best. Thanks again! Mark Maddison Durban South Africa 15 April 2024

We love hunting dogs just as pets. Temperament is what we look for have had goldens and now clumbers so we have been looking at gsp as our next go around. Don’t hunt but do have a lake house and do hiking have done obedience training with our goldens. Are gsp good just for pets or do they need lots of exercise and running?

They are great pets!! They’re very hyper active and do need consistent exercise everyday to release they’re energy. Best advice is to let them loose in the back yard and let them roam or throw a ball they will just run all day. They love jumping and leaping everywhere if they get to excited around new people.
@ichigo1793 Жыл бұрын
I've got 2.5 acres of land and an acre of it isn't being used at the moment so all of my GSPs are outside dogs and they just let loose everyday. Especially when I'm mowing all sorts of flying bugs and what not start flying away and my dogs will chase them day in and day out.

What makes your kennel different from a Puppy Mill?
@StandingStoneKennels Жыл бұрын
Our Philosophy At Standing Stone Kennels we strive to produce affectionate dogs with incredible natural ability that will make excellent family dogs and exceptional hunting dogs. We look for qualities in our parent dogs that complement each other and will produce a dog with a metaphorical “light switch”. Our dogs know how to behave and calm down in the house, but also know how to turn it on and tear up a field! When we evaluate dogs for our breeding program we look for dogs with natural ability, versatility, cooperation, drive, confidence, affection, intelligence and dogs that will make excellent family companions. We look forward to our upcoming litters with excitement. Puppies are a blessing and we always make sure they become part of loving families. We don't breed dogs, just to breed dogs and sell puppies. Each breeding is planned in advance and chosen to produce puppies with sound genetics and everything we are looking for in the next generation of our breeding program. All of our puppies are whelped and raised in the house, because we understand the importance of early socialization and development. The puppies also experience many new things during their first 7 weeks. They go on car rides, play outside in our environmental enrichment puppy pen and swim at the pond (weather permitting), as well as go through a brief bird and gun introduction.

Lovely pups! Why are their tails docked? There is absolutely no reason to dock any dogs tail!
@phauser3817 Жыл бұрын
Actually there are a few reasons. GSPs have very long, thin tails, and are super hard tail waggers. Also, the fur on their tails have thin fur, so no "padding". The tails that don't get cropped often get broken, especially when they are running through the woods and fields, which leads to painful abscesses and infections.

Do you feel a puppy more high strung has more drive than a laid back puppy? Also do you pay attention to how much they are sniffing and smelling around or which one uses it’s nose the most, or does that not have anything to do with choosing?

Sadly getting the dog is not up to me since it’s my boyfriend’s family so we’re gonna be take a Malinois from a backyard breeder.. I know it’s bad but I don’t have a say.. However I do intend to do whatever I can to prepare for this baby to come I’ve failed with my last boy.. I do not intend to fail this time there’s not a day I don’t think about my sweet Kaiser boy.. So even tho he’s not precisely my dog most of the care is gonna be on me so gonna act as if as he’s mine and give him the best care possible. Also trying to figure out how I’m gonna find out which puppy is the calmest out of them all (we have a little girl at home)

You can also be a saving grace for a pet that's been rescued from a life of hell... abuse, starved, made to fight, made to breed and breed, people WANT a pet, realize they SHOULD NOT HAVE gotten an animal mainly because NO PETS ALLOWED, so now they dump it. Every pet we've ever had has been a RESCUE. ADOPT DON'T SHOP
@criticza92072 жыл бұрын
You mad because we don't adopt but go buy
@jessicagislason4855 Жыл бұрын
You say that but alot of people don't actually have the means to care for a reactive, aggressive, or fearful dog like many in shelters. Here's a better idea: If we promoted responsible breeders who actually care about their dogs and are picky about homes, people would have a harder time getting dogs and have to actually do research and spend money on a dog they can handle and would inturn lessen and shut down backyard breeders and mills, because most breeders make you fix your dog to prevent accidental litters or irresponsible breeding. If people were responsible they wouldn't be spending 15$ on a damn pitbull to take home to their one bedroom apartment, but they don't care that's why we need to support dog breeders who actually care and want their dogs to go to the best homes so people can stop treating them like objects and actually get help if they make mistakes or are in over their head
@mariaenroth70583 ай бұрын
She's a responsible breeder not a puppy mill that gives their dogs to a pet shop.
