@RKTUNES teaches us how to pick an engine tuner! This is a great episode because it applies to almost all of us in the drifting community. I have so many different drift cars, and they can all be a disaster at times, and I need help within the ECU to fix stuff. He comes up with some great points and counter points to my ECU tuning topic, such as diagnosing cars and finding all the problems with them before they go on dyno. RK Tunes is a BMW tuner that does a ton of different turbo cars including E36 M3, F80 M3, 335i BMW, N54, N55, B58 and more.

Fully agreed on understanding fundamentals… if they don’t understand it/can’t diagnose it they’’ll never be able to control it. There was a team of 15 engineers when it was working at a particular OE as a calibrator who had worked on a V8 turbo stall issue for 3 months… someone asked if I could take a look and I figured it out and fixed it in less than a day. Car had compressor surge but they couldn’t “see” it because the sensor wasn’t in a good place to see the pulses (and they didn’t understand the fundamentals).

Loved this video! from someone who hasn’t gotten a car tuned before I would way rather deal with someone that’s brutally honest then someone trying to make me happy

I think one of the best ways to navigate cars in general is to be super intentional about the end goal of the car and find the people who are already doing that.So if you want a certain power goal , knowing the combination of parts to get there and then using that to find the tuners who have done those combos and talking to the customers will help. To benefit the most from cars it almost forces you to be pretty committed to a community. That will give you some insights to parts/ tuner availability and locality. Having a community (depending on size and quality) could also give you direct access to riding in builds that you could have reference for if you like the setup or not and then just be able to copy and paste.

Long ago my car was down a couple tenths and trying to get back what I lost. I found like another 4 tenths from problems that I didn't know it had. Learned a lot about bout setting up cars chasing those 2 tenths. Jordan is right a lot of cars have issues people don't know about and tune around when they should fix them. People accept flaws or poor quality from the aftermarket because it's the easy/cheap option.

I do a lot of remote tuning... fixed a lot of tuning issues lately. What i come acros a lot in stock ecu tuning world is people cheaping out on parts like fuel pressure sensors fuel pumps map sensors... they buy ebay stuf and then u end up wasting ur time sorting out the issues. You out new sensors in it and u can fi ally start tuning... i am not the greatest mechanic but i can manage.. as jordan says u kinda have to work on the costumers cars.. its how it is.

This is really interesting and something i never thought of, in a way it's like the tunner is the bull shit detector of your build. If they don't understand how the thing works how would they ever make it work properly?

All tuners should 100% have an independent mechanical repair hourly fee. Price it high enough to force people into showing up ready to go.

@@michaelgomez4994 The tuner should absolutely have an advanced understanding of automotive diagnostics and mechanical repair. Builders should also have respect for them and do their part in preventing the use of that skill set unless absolutely necessary.

Not sure you’ll even see this (Jordan) But what’s your opinion on having more than one tuner work on a car? Classic too many chefs in the kitchen? Or actually a good idea having more than one set of (professional) eyes on the project
