I have mentioned a topic to quite a few people that have helped them hear better in the field. It is unbelievable how much wax build up most of us have in our ears especially those who sleep on our sides. Every 2 years, 2 weeks before Turkey opener I get my ears flushed at the Dr's office and you wouldn't believe the super hearing you have because of this. Of course this doesn't solve the issue of muzzle blast and hearing damage but its incredible how much better you can hear after this. I purchased a set of Walkers Elite HD 4 years ago and got custom molds done, at the time they were the best thing on the market. $700 CDN. I stopped using them because they amplify everything relating to background noise, if you are hunting a few miles from a busy road it is unbearable, perhaps dizzying or confusing if that makes any sense. Do you find the same thing with these?
@TheNewHuntersGuide Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Sam! That is a good tip. I should look into that. Actually no, the tetras do a great job filtering out background noise. I hunt by roads at times, moving water, on windy days, and they are great. On days I'm scouting and going to various spots, I even wear them in the car, I never take them out. That would have been very painful to do with my old walkers. I honestly forget I have the Tetra's in at times.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide Good know, thanks. I'll likely give them a try. If they work the way you just explained I'll just get a mold made for them here.

@@CADwaterfowler They fit me pretty good without a custom mold, so you never know.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide Yes, we'll see how comfortable they are stock. Back to the ear flushing you won't believe how amazing it feels after it's done. When you walk out of the office you're certain you can hear a pin drop.

Have you ever tried the Axils? These are nice but the Axil is more in line with my budget.
@TheNewHuntersGuide Жыл бұрын
I have not used them, they seem to be more of an entry level device similar to the Walker's I started with. I would say use them! Use anything you can to protect your hearing.

Isn't this new hunters guide? Like how am I supposed to pay 750-2500 for this as a new hunter?

I have concerns with these. The noise reduction rating is not as high as a pair of over the ear units. I would think to protect hearing, that the rating should be higher. That, more than price has me reluctant to try them.
@TheNewHuntersGuide10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how those ratings are achieved but I can tell you they do a phenomenal job. To test them, I've stood on the trap line, feet from ported barrels firing constantly and these are more than ample for the job. As good as the best foam and silicone ear plugs I used. I think the custom shield does maybe a little better than the AlphaShield but I've used both extensively and there are no complaints. For hunting, they couldn't be better.

The Alpha Sheilds do not, but the new Custom Sheilds do.

Dude... $ 3,000 US before shipping and taxes?! We're in madness territory... IMHO...
@TheNewHuntersGuide Жыл бұрын
Only if you want the highest-grade custom model. But they are still cheaper than the comparable hearing aids that not using hearing protection will drive you to. Waterfowl Alpha Sheilds start at $749. Even the highest-grade Alpha Sheild multi pursuit units are still cheaper than a Benelli SBE3 that people don't think twice about.

@@TheNewHuntersGuide ...good point, indeed... I guess the major selling point is not solely the "hearing protection" but rather the "hearing enhancement" combined with hearing protection... For $150 CAD, you can have silicone custom molded earplugs that will very effectively protect your hearing for a looong time... But you won't be able to hear much of what's going on around you... And that can be - depending on the situation - an inconvenience, or quite a hazard...
@TheNewHuntersGuide Жыл бұрын
@@CanadianWaterfowler Yea, for $2 you can get some high-grade foam ear plugs, I have lots of them. They will protect your ears from everything, but the hunting experience is terrible. These both preserve the hunting experience by letting you hear normally, and let you hear the game better than you could without them. Often you forget you have them on. That is what you pay for, letting you hear normally and giving you an edge with what you are hunting. Truth is, most hunters just won't use ear plugs, not being able to hear the hunt really hampers the experience. It doesn't matter that hearing protection can be cheap if most won't do it. These are a game changer; I was debating giving up waterfowl hunting and then I found them. It's been a game changer.
