What do you think about the quality of XY Stereo mics? Good, Bad? Would you consider picking one of these up?

I have a Zoom H4N Pro, different the the regular H4N, and there something that people should know before coming to a decision, H4N pro has setting that I don't feel are being utilized in this video (*Note* these features are on the regular H4N but are limited). First: you can change to Low Cut input of the mic from 80hz to 237hz, that would cut the background noise with the machine. Second: the Compessor/Limit has a Vocal setting, rather then using general, drums, or studio settings. Third you can change the Wav file settings to the best possible preferred settings, Wav44.1khz/16bit-24bit, Wav48kHz/16bit-24bit, Wav96kHz/16bit-24bit, and mp3 48kbps-320kbps and VBR.

ps don't us my videos as reference to the sound quality, I've just recently learned about these setting and have not applied them to my videos. I have tested them though and I will update this comment when I have a video that will show the best of what the Zoom H4N can do.

Great video - I listened with headphones and the H6 had the clearest sound. However there was some noise coming from the right hand side. Any ideas what that was?

I'm looking for something more portable than my Focusrite 2i2, mainly for voice over -- someone can take this and start recording without plugging in a mic. H4N is in the lead right now. I think it also shows up as an audio device on a PC you can record.

H6 has noticeable self noise on the right channel. I'm listening thru HD558s thru a Schiit dac/amp stack.

Lol did you make up that story yourself 🤣

The popping on all of them in the first 4 minutes drove me nuts. Once they were on the cameras, the H4n was my least favorite. The audio had this crunchiness in the high end that didn't flatter the voice at all. The H6 had a surprisingly high noise floor, but if you could sort out the noise, it sounded the best by far.

Seems like EQ could fix that.

Very good comparison. I never realized the mics on the H6 were that much bigger. It shows up in the waveform and sound. Great video

I'm surprised you haven't included the H2N. It's what I use.

Hi, Lo. I need your advice. For the first time I need to record two microphones but my audio interface only has one channel, so I gotta buy a new one. I was thinking of getting a Behringer UMC202HD but then I remembered you raving about a Yamaha mixer. I checked the MG06X and it looks pretty rad, but it's not USB and I've never used a mixer before. Should I connect it to my computer with TRS jacks? Do you think the Yamaha will be a better option than the Behringer or a Focusrite 2i2 for that matter? Help me, Lo. You know, sort of : D

Look for a 2 channel audio interface, not a mixer. Behringer, Tascam, Focusrite, Audient, etc. all make 2 channel interfaces. Mixers have a critical flaw- almost all of them mix down to two channels even if the mixer has more than 2 inputs.
@zezesilver6 жыл бұрын
G Kanai That wouldn't be an issue for me since I only need two channels, but I've been doing some research and nobody recommends connecting a non-USB mixer directly to a PC because of the PC's poor AD convertion. Now, how about getting the mixer's signal into the interface first?

> Now, how about getting the mixer's signal into the interface first? If you get the audio interface, you would not need the mixer. If you needed more channels, you could get an interface with more channels.

I could get either a 2-ch interface like the Behringer or a 2-ch mixer like the Yamaha and connect the latter to the interface I already own. I guess that in terms of quality, any of these two set-ups will do - and I'd spend the same amount of money since I'd be replacing my current interface or adding a mixer to it. Currently, I lean towards the mixer option because of its extra features (EQ, Fx, etc.) but quality is always my priority, so I need someone to confirm that my reasoning is okay, or not.
@gkanai14006 жыл бұрын
If you need the _mixing_ function, then a mixer would do that much better than an interface. But for most podcasting or music/vocal recording, an interface would be better, imo. A mixer is obviously designed for mixing sources whereas the interface is for recording/interfacing between mics/instruments and the computer. Sorry if this is obvious- I'm still not quite sure what your need is and therefor it is hard to advise.

Lo, ya drivin’ me crazy, man. PLEASE give a direct, back-to-back, no-commentary-between comparison à lá Booth Junkie. When you keep inserting your comments between, I can’t pick up the subtleties of the differences. As always, thanks for good info. I just want it to be even more helpful! :-)

Hey, anything i can do to make the videos better i am all for it. Can you explain it to me again exactly what you like me to do. Talk slower, talk less? Be more deliberate and paced on what i am saying?
@eclexian6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry; I'll try to be clearer. I *like* the content a lot, and your attitude about it all slays me! Really, it's all kewl beans. What would really help, though, with this kind of comparison is if you just switch between the mic's while reading or speaking your test script, indicating on the screen which mic we're hearing at that moment, while you switch between them. By interweaving commentary between the subject audio clips, you require me to remember the fine point of what the last one sounded like after you've injected your commentary. My hearing and memory just aren't always that good! Thanks!

Ahhhhhh ok, yeah i see what you are saying. Yeah, for some reason that completely slipped my mind and its such a common thing with mic comparisons. I thought i was doing something like that in the moment, but it really wasnt a side by A/B comparison to pick up the nuances. Ill keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion.
