How To Pick The RIGHT Pre-emergent For Your Lawn

If the Pre- Emergent has "Mesotrione" in it, you can seed with it. I've overseeded my lawn 3 times, and I've put down tenacity before seeding and my seeds grew every time.

The pre emergents discussed in the video are not to be used with seeding as stated. Yes you can seed when using Mesotrione but you only get about 21 days of pre emergent coverage at best...typically less. The products discussed in this video are real pre-emergents with longer coverage up to 4-6 months depending on application rate and grass type.

Tenacity is a post and pre emergent with Mesotrione in it to allow you to seed with it. That's my choice every time. 💯🤙🏿💪🏿😎

I only use tenacity on bare ground seeding, other than that there are better and more effective products available.

My 5 oz bottle of Prodiamine will be hear tomorrow from gci. I definitely need to spike it with some speedzone. I may do some spring seeding in one section of my yard so I'll be skipping the prodiamine for that section.

Doing a split podi this spring but how long do I wait? Its only been two weeks since the first 1/3 application. In the Fall, i wish to seed in Central VA.. Late Aug- Sept 1-10th, hopefully. So, the Fall application of podimine should be how many days after seeding? 45 or more??

I only do my split application in 2 apps in the spring about 45-60 days apart. I do not apply pre-emergent in the fall. In the fall, my goal is establishing the new seed and driving as much root system as possible. Applying a fall pre-emergent when overseeding does the exact opposite of that goal.

@@ballershanelle yeah don't overthink pre-emergent. My recommendation is put down your next app with the remaining 2/3s and be done. Skip the fall app and focus on your overseeding and fertilization.

Great video. I prefer dimension 2EW. It will have a post emergent effect on crabgrass, but only at the max single application rate. I also prefer the liquid because it's labeled for dandelion vs the granular app of dimension. For the average homeowner, your right, go with the granular. I own a lawn treatment company so I use liquids for everything except fertilizer.

I agree with you 💯. I prefer to use liquid over the granular too. I have the equipment to do it, its an easy application and I feel like I get better coverage with the liquid. Mine is down already so you could watch this video today 🤣. My soil temps are at 50 degrees right now. Thats when I typically go down with my pre-emergent. Check your soil temps for your area using Greencast online or use a meat thermometer

Cam: One point as you know, in Maryland, spray applications of pre-emergents prior to March 1st are ok but most available granular pre-emergents have added fertilizer ( usually K or N or both) and cannot apply until March 1.

You are mostly correct Gerry for MD. K is actually not regulated and doesn't fall within the fertilizer blackout dates. So, a K only pre-emergent fert would work. Great point to bring up! Thanks for always watching 🙏🏾!

Hi Cameron great videos, I have been following your videos since we moved into our house almost two years ago. We live in the cool season zone and I purchase that tall fescue blend that you recommended with great success such a beautiful green. Now I plan on using Prodiamine in granular form once the temps rise a bit, my question is once I put the pre-emergent down can I still seed in the fall around September or will the pre-emergent still be active. First, thank you for your continued support for the channel 🙏🏾! I'm glad that you had great success with your fall overseeding based on my recommendations. Yes, you will be able to overseed in the fall if you apply the correct amount of Prodiamine based how many months of coverage you need. There should be an application rate on the bag based on the amount of coverage desired. I typically want my pre-emergent coverage to end about a month before I want to overseed if possible. Hope this info helps.
