Welcome to The Blue Mouse Knits! Today I'll be teaching you how to pick up stitches along a vertical side edge. This is perfect if you need to pick up and knit stitches for along a sleeve, or pick up and knit a button band, or even pick up and knit a neckline. I demonstrate this on a stockinette vertical edge using a contrasting color so its easy to see. I am a continental knitter, but this will work just the same for you English knitters. I will explain basic pick up rates for knitting such as 2/3, 3/4, 1/2. So not only is this a demonstration of how to pick up and knit stitches, but also how to pick up stitches and skip 1. I demonstrate first how to pick up stitches with a knitting needle and then how to pick up stitches along an edge with a crochet hook.

Great tutorial! But how do I know what the pick up rate is? If I'm not using a pattern how do I decide which stitch to skip?

There’s some standards for it, I don’t know off the top of my head but if you google it there are some great blogposts on it. I think it’s usually 3/4 rate for a straight vertical edge but I’m not fully sure. Different standard rates for different angles you’re picking up from. There’s also a way to customize it based on your gauge, there’s a tutorial for that online too.

i' m your fan from Australia ,can you help me with this pattern : what is this mean? RS facing, begin at duckling’s Left Neck Marker, with yarn CD, pick up and knit 4 sts evenly along row ends towards the Head Back seam; pick up and knit 1 stitch at the seam; pick and knit 4 sts from the seam evenly along row ends to the Right Neck Marker

Sure! I'll try my best to help. I would rewrite it like this to make it clearer: 1.) With the Right side of your work facing, begin at these steps at the ducklings left neck marker 3.) Using CD (assuming it means color D): pick up and knit 4 stitches evenly across the row until you reach the end near the head back seam. She's not giving you an exact pick up rate here, so you can count how many available spaces you have between the left neck marker and the head back seam (how many spaces you could use to pick up a stitch), then you can either just make it up as you go to try and evenly space out your pick up stitches. OR you can use an online calculator to give you an exact pick up rate. I suggest the one from retrowool (google KNITTING CALCULATOR FOR PICK UP AND KNIT with that) and you can put in your 2 numbers and it will give you an exact pick up rate. Since it's such a small number of stitches I bet you could just wing it. 4.) Pick up and knit 1 stitch at the head back seam. 5.) Pick up 4 stitches evenly from the back head seam to the right neck marker. This is the same process as step 3 so I'm assuming the pick up rate will be the same. Hard to tell without a schematic, but that would be my best guess. So you can kind of wing it and pick up those 4 stitches randomly til you think it looks good with no big gaps, or you can follow the calculator for a more exact rate. Hope that helps
