I have made my own pillars and glassed them into the stock while precompressed. I have done 3 Rem700s that way. Larry Potterfield accomplishes the same thing with a lot less lathe and mill time. Hat's off to Larry for making some of the best gunsmithing on youtube.

That is the easiest and the best way I have ever seen a pillar bedding job done. People, if you want to bed your rifle. Get this kit from Midway and follow the instruction exactly. You cant go wrong. Wish they had this kit back in the day. Great Great video for beginners and experienced people too.

I believe there is merit to only bed the action at two points. Full length bedding of the action can lead to torsional stress if the stock warps later on, while 2 point bedding will not. Some might argue that if the stock is full length bedded that it will not warp, but that just isn’t true.

Larry Potterfield, I have had several Gunsmiths tell me the you either pillar bed a rifle or you glass/metal bed a rifle but you shouldn't do both. What are your thoughts?
@deftfuture45704 жыл бұрын
currently im devcon bedding a remington police 700, and the bolts we were given were wayy too loose in the stock we chose. so to fix that, we pillar bedded the bolts, and are devcon bedding. i’m not sure about glass bedding, but i would say, if the situation arises while you’re bedding a rifle where you have to pillar bed. i think that’s okay

I bought this product. The material between the stock and trigger assembly at the rear insert becomes so thin after drilling, it easily cracks. The rear insert diameter is too big, in my opinion. After removing everything and repairing the stock, I used the original rear screw with washers for shims and metal tubing for a sleeve. No problems.

i understand that bedding improves accuracy and works well in wooden stocks since wood "breathes". what if its a synthetic or plastic stock. is glass bedding necessary, will it improve accuracy like in a wood stock?

Would glass bedding the stock in conjunction with these bedding pillars be a good idea, or would it be overkill?
@holdensauve59348 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Skific Good idea if you have the funds
@Liberty-wo2iy8 жыл бұрын
+Nicholas Skific It's best to do it in two steps. Pillar bed first, then do the glass bedding. The pillars provide correct spacing, strength and structure for the glass bedding to set up the way you want it.

These pillars are massive WAY to THICK!!!. Aluminum thick pillars that reduce the strength of the stock. FACT Boyds uses these type of Pillars and the rear part of the stock cannot be pillar bedded at the rear tange areas to much stock is removed safety issue! My Savage arms uses thinner steel pillars. from the factory on there stocks. I see people doing a lot of pillar jobs and alignment and depth between the front and rear pillars is critical. When alignment/heights are wrong you have just created a twist in the action between the lower reciever/magazine and accuracy will not improve it will worsen.

This is all way too much trouble, especially for an amateur. The damned gun, in my case a Ruger M77 in .270 Win., should have grouped correctly out of the box like my Remingtons did. I see much potential for screwing the stock up and with questionable results.
