Forty years of growing & pruning fig trees, I never pinched the new growth. If you pinch you limit the growth, there for you limit the fruit. After getting 3 bushel or 24 dry gallons of figs off one tree & never pinch a bud, no not one. Maybe you are talking about small potted plants, we grow our trees in the ground in rich compost. We do remove water spouts after the 2nd fruiting, but pinching new grow forces more growth, so you cause more leave & limb growth, not less. Take care of the tree, give it rich soil,water, mulch & room to grow & you will never have a problem with fig trees bearing.

THe tip of branches produce a hormone that stops lower branches near the tip from growing. Take off the tip and the branch buds below the tip start to grow that is how hedging works. Seems strange that it also helps fruit to form as it obviously does.

Hi there, we dont normally pinch for main crop figs here in the UK as our growing season is so short and cool so we normally prune to encourage new growth for breba production the following year. I suspect with our lower summer temperatures the fig development could easily take 100 days or more. With this in mind I have watched several pinching videos and they mentioned that if you want to pinch to try for figs, to look into the leaf nodes and look for a 'twin / double' embryo bud, one is supposed to be an embryo growth bud, the other an embryo fig, and that branch is one to pinch. They said if there is only a single embryo bud then pinching will only encourage new branches. Do you generally follow that rule of thumb or have you found that pinching any branch will force the tree to make a 2nd embryo bud to grow a fig? It must vary from region to region and from variety to variety 🙂
@GalaArtFigs5 жыл бұрын
I watched such a video from Ross. But in any case I pinch arter 4 node.
@PAFigs5 жыл бұрын
If you see 2 buds, there is no need to pinch as the fig is already forming. If you see 2 buds, likely 1 is a fig and 1 is a branch, however it could also be 2 figs. If you see only 1 bud, there is no way to tell if it is a branch or a fig until it forms.

So, last year I pinched my fairly young fig trees (1-2 years old). This year the trees are still fairly small so I'm just going to try and get as much strong vegetative growth so that I can start off next year with a lot of good structure. If some of the trees are still a little small, I'll probably not pinch next year as well.

One thing you didn't spend time on is that when a fig tree is all bunched up and crowded with leaves, it reduces the overall amount of air and sunlight for the tree. I would remove a few dark and over large leaves to make more air and sunlight for the tree. It will give you a better yield of figs too.
@PAFigs4 жыл бұрын
A good point, although the increased airflow to reduce pests and disease is likely a much larger benefit.

i live in lebanon, pa., and my husband planted fig in the ground years ago. we don't know what variety it is, but it is a bush which gives new shoots every year. last year, fruits came out before the leaves, and we were enjoying the fruits all summer. in the fall, when it was dormant, i pruned the top because it was getting too tall and cut off the criss-crossing branches but not well enough afraid of ruining the bush, and also i uprooted some new growth to replant them in small pots. out of 4 only 2 lived. now, the bush is only getting new shoots from the ground, none on the old wood. have i upset the bush from my pruning? this is the end of june, is it still ok to pinch the new growth? thanks in advance for your reply.
@PAFigs2 жыл бұрын
Sometimes a harsh winter will cause our trees to die to the ground. Luckily, they will often send out new shoots from the roots. Next winter, try covering the fig with a tarp all winter to keep some of the harsh wind off of it. You can still pinch new growth to help shape the tree. I usually estimate any new fruit after July 4th will be unlikely to ripen properly in our zone.

Any balanced fertilizer will be fine. I mostly use plain old Miracle Grow. I don't know if you have many insect pests in Florida that affect figs. I imagine you would need to be more worried about fungus and mildew.

@PAFigs5 жыл бұрын
Some people prune after the main stalk gets a foot high to get a "vase" shape. Some people never prune. My take is only prune hardened "brown wood", but you can pinch green growth. I've been known to break my own rule on occasion.

I'm in zone 6B Pa my husband bought a fig tree that more like a bush because it shoots up multiple shoots every year The branches do not have vertical branches just 1 horizontal branch. The fruit buds start in July / August and they are ready to harvest in October. As you know PA weather is cold in October So we don't get many figs. I think my husband bought the wrong type of fig tree for our zone. What is your recommended fig tree for zone 6B?
@PAFigs4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your tree is dying back to the ground each winter. Try wrapping it with burlap and a tarp this winter to see if it helps. For varieties, I would recommend Hardy Chicago or Improved Celeste (not Celeste, there is a big difference).

Figs like to have their roots constrained and this results in more fruit production thus a pot is preferable

If mine would survive in ground, I would plant them in ground. You will get a LOT more fruit in ground if they do not die back over the winter.

@PAFigs4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used to do that. It works well as long as you use pots with holes on the side only (not bottom). Then just take an edger around the pot in the fall and bring it in. It also helps to bury the pot slightly. I stopped doing this when I put weed fabric down... makes mowing much easier.

Shanthi Nathireddy If your figs potted use balanced fertilizer or for tomato fertilizer. Make sure N not higher than P (N-P-K) Best if this numbers equal. If P is higher you always can add blood meal or fish fertilizer. If your figs grow in ground they just need to be 2-3 year old to start producing. Much less fertilizer, unless your soil too poor

Honestly I do not understand your logic of not pruning the branch @6:24 and pruning the one @6:34.. the former because you wanted it to grow taller, the latter because it will only produce a few figs? The latter branch is lower and it looks just like the former in terms of the possible number of figs it can produce.
