Its nice to see the Baby Webster and Bennet vertical borer still being used in the world, as an apprentice I grew up in the 1960s using the 36" table model the guy is using and ended up on the 144" table model. We soon learned that if you used the correct feeds and speeds, with correctly ground tools with chip breakers, That the material would come off in chips not string like in the video, very dangerous and the easiest way to loose fingers or get dragged into the machine. Still very interesting and like any heavy engineering shop way different from the world of CNC.

I worked for a company that supplied the tooling to Delphi and other steering companies in Michigan. I always heard chips were better than strips, as well. I also fabricated industrial vacuums to collect the material, which chips were definitely easier for that 😉

Watched this video, and have some concerns on the machining process: 1) Has anyone given thought to the damage those lifting chains can cause those machine gears. Wouldn't nylon straps be better? 2) Has anyone heard of a table? Why place these finely machined gears on a dirty floor? 3) The fella who places the large wrench on the big nut, then uses a pipe as leverage -- he just slams the pipe in without concern for damaging a gear. 4) These gears have to be tempered at some point. But not shown. and 5) I see some machining damage at the top of the lower gear at the end (31:25). Can anyone else see it?

It costs nothing to sweep the damn floor and get rid of tripping hazards, and peanuts to give those guys proper steel tipped boots, hardheads, and eye protection. Although this one must be highly reputable shop, they just wouldn't do it. I have seen it everywhere in SE Asia, from Pakistan to Thailand to Vietnam. It has never changed since my first exposure to it back in 1985. Total contempt of the entire industry for personal safety.
