Great tips! I just started playing golf a few months ago and have realized the importance of the short distance game especially with the wedges. Found the technique guidance very helpful but unless I missed something you did not mention the desirability of playing with a suitable golf ball which is soft feeling and allows more spin. I am aware that soft/hard feeling balls react differently.

Another great video. Since watching your videos, with a little help from our club pro (he loves your drills too), I have lost 4 shots on my handicap this year, which considering our course has more trees than a Forest I'm pleased with. Down to 20 now having only been playing properly for 2 and half years. Still struggle a bit with my alignment though, so might have to go back through the videos again to find out about how best to improve that. I enjoyed the video and learned something here but I have a question about how much you actually set your wrists. At 9:07 I paused at the top of your swing and your arms are horizontal to the ground and the club is facing straight up making your wrist at a number 5 position as you called it. They are at a full set. Is the way you stand the real difference here to get more spin or is there something different about your "swing" that's different from an average iron shot? If I'm getting this right, feet close together, don't take a divot and don't get too wristy (over-rotate) on the follow through but you can still fully set your wrists on the backswing?

What is the shortest distance one could expect to get a reasonable amount of spin (to make the ball check up) and what' s the shortest distance one would be able to draw the ball? Chris, great video; thx. I'd like to know if your initial move from the top is to pull down with your left hand or push from your right side. I discovered quite by accident that my consistency and accuracy improved substantially by pulling down on the forward swing with my left hand/arm. I also get great results by using my body to power the handle through the shot rather than swinging my arms and rotating my body simultaneously.

So in summary, set up very neutral and hit it with a kind of "half" swing and let the club do the work. I also noticed quite a bit of release of the club which is useful for clean contact to utilize the bounce. I think a lot of us get "stabby" with this shot and hence hit it fat or thin.

You'd be involving too much fairway which will lead to inconsistent roll and bounces. The idea is to land the ball on or just before the green and have it stop ASAP

Hi Nate, I would say yes, most probably too narrow with the swing, too much release and not enough body pivot. Try to limit the hand/wrist action and increase the body pivot, should help 👍

Im a 3 handicap and my advice would be dont put the shaft forward much on a pitch shot, that just de-lofts the face. Hold the club pretty vertical, and you can open the face slightly to add some bounce to the club which allows you to just pick the ball up off the turf with no divot. If you watch pros in slo motion they dont do much of a shaft lean on pitching. Also you dont want to release your hands much on a pitch to add bounce thats how you blade it across the green. Just have your hands soft with not much wrist action and the club face slightly open and a nice shallow swing and you should be able to pick the ball up cleanly. You can practice on the fringe of a green when no one is around, you should get such clean strikes that you can pitch a ball off the surface of a green and not even leave a mark on the green. That’s how I do it anyway and have seen the pros do it.

How much does the width of your stance (space between feet) matter with shots like this? For years I kept my feet pretty close together in mid range/ short chip shots & this year I’ve widened my stance a bit & am pitching the ball better than ever.
