Wow thank you. This is very very helpful! I usually sit on a low chair when sketching outside, and my figures just didn't look right. I thought the eye was absolute, and didn't realize the horizon could pass through a lower part of their bodies. The cutouts were a brilliant way to demonstrate the principle of how things alter depending on our height.
@teohyc

+Vicki Wood Yeah, if you sit low, then your eye level and horizon will cut through the lower part of other people's body.

Thanks Teoh. This is the best description on this topic that I have seen on KZbin. There is a consideration when including smaller people such as children in a painting but they can be guaged by their relationship to the adults. Your use of the cut-outs was very helpful.

I agree with everyone, Teoh!! This is one of the best explanation/tutorial you've made, and the rough rule of thumb is easy for me to remember.... Standing up, horizon line is about eye level; sitting down/squatting, horizon line is about waist level. Now I might actually try and doodle something other than my dog's face! Please keep up these wonderful tutorials!! One of these days, I hope to sketch and color as nicely as you! :)

Loved your video, very informative. However, you didn't explain how to draw people of different heights (especially massive differences, like children), and I cant really find a video that explains this thoroughly. It would be lovely if you could make another video on this specific subject. BTW, I love your art!
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+alifedor Children are shorter, so their height will be at the hip level of adults. Using the same concept in the video, just draw the adults at half the height. (Of course kids' height vary).
@ihy8602
@ihy8602 8 жыл бұрын
+alifedor You pretty much have to study basic anatomy and proportions. The average adult is about 7 and a half heads tall, while a child will have various different proportions at young ages. You also need to know where it's ok to distort the figure and where you absolutely have to keep proportions. If you want to stretch or lower someone's height the lower leg is the safest place to do so. I recommend grabbing a copy of Andrew Loomis's Figure Drawing For All It's Worth, you should be able to easily find a pdf online.

Excellent Teoh. A concept well-handled and of great value in sketching. If you were on a cliff and looking and your eye level would be pretty high, how would you then draw people below you?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Chammi Kaiser If you're on a cliff, those people below you would not intercept your horizon/eye level. You must draw using basic drawing principles, measure and keep in mine the proportion. Those people below will be foreshortened and quite challenging to draw. It's good to use contour drawing to break out of thinking you're drawing people, and think instead of drawing shapes.

I found this really helpful. Would appreciate some hints on how to draw figures who are lower down - perhaps on the lower level of a shopping centre. You did show something of this in one of the sketches on this video. Do I just have to guess where to place them or is there some helpful rule to follow? Many thanks.
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Margaret Caton I'm not sure I have any techniques for that. It's the same observation drawing techniques used for drawing other subjects. When drawing people who are foreshortened, it's important to pay attention to the proportion, and how each body part overlaps with the other from your view.

That's super Theo I was wondering if this would not apply to, say, a father walking with his little child. The horizon might cut through the father's chest (for example) but that would be way above the child's chest. In this case the child is drawn in proportion to the father and the horizon is ignored. Is that correct?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+R Hamer The kid, if short, would be lower than the horizon. It's easier to draw the kid in proportion to the father. The size difference will make it clear.
@dalex100

Hey Teoh, thanks for the great advice! I have a question. The eye level cuts through every person at the same body part only if they are the same height right? Let's say if every person eyes coincide with the horizon and I want to make someone shorter, that shorter person won't have his eye on the horizon line right?
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+dalex100 Yup, the shorter person (shorter than you) will not have the eyes at the horizon.

Thank you so much for this video. It is very helpful. Where I struggle is when there are children to sketch. They look like very small adults, although I try to make their heads bigger in relation to their bodies. Do you have any tips for sketching kids? This would be very much appreciated. I really love your videos!
@teohyc
@teohyc 8 жыл бұрын
+Susanne Mandl HI, children indeed have bigger heads relative to their bodies. When it's just a kid in the scene, it's may not be obvious that that's a kid. To make it more obvious, you can have an adult standing nearby so that there is a contrast in height and at a glance the characters will read clearer.
