Really helpful and informative. I bought a beginner’s mandolin and expected it to be playable out of the box.

This video is a life saver, bought a cheap Rogue 100-MA and the thing sounded absolutely horrible and after moving the bridge and raising the height, it sounds so much better, you can tell it is cheaply made because they didnt even leave room for you to properly place the bridge, I head to remove the pick guard

6 7/8 ? is that the start, middle or rear of the twelfth fret?

It would be helpful to include instructions on setting the bridge height.
@BradfordGuy8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Naylor: Your bridge height will be set for each individual player; to get the best action for you - high or low, alleviate fret buzz, etc. Set your bridge height to where it allows you to play comfortably without fret buzz across the neck.

Thanx, been playing mostly guitar but switched over to mandolin and you're set-up instruction on bridge intonation was very helpful. Took 12th fret to bridge bass measurement to 6 15/16 in. as yes each instrument is a little different. I lemon oil the rosewood fingerboard also to preserve/clean.

Can you comment on the zig zag nature of the bridge and how this affects intonation .very diff from guitar . ?

Are you going to the middle of the twelfth fret or the twelfth fret bar , and are you going to the edge of the bridge or the middle of it for your measurements ?

When you're going from the nut down to the 12th fret to get your scale do you measure to the metal of the 12th fret are from the age back toward the nut to get your distance to set your Bridge go from the 12th fret to Water Bridge supposed to be

it would be helpful if you'd tell us what part of the COMPENSATING BRIDGE you're measuring
@BradfordGuy8 жыл бұрын
+bhudski: Use the approximate center-point of the adjusting screws as your measuring point.

I have an electric mandolin that came from Vietnam. I measured from the nut to the 12th fret and it was 6 and 7/8ths. However, when I measure from the 12th fret up 6 and 7/8ths, it is just about clears the bridge pickup. The bridge initially was set at 7 and 3/4". If I leave the bridge where it is, will I be okay as long as I don't play above the 12th fret?

NO - every fretted note will be off.

Nice but prefer metric measurements

If I placed my bridge the same distance from the 12th fret as the nut I would have to remove the pick guard.

I've never held a violin, cello, mandolin, or archtop guitar that did not have distinct markings where the bridge should be- you just need to know what you're looking for. The F holes are your markings. If you look, the inner center notch/line on the f hole is the bottom, the outer is the top of your bridge. This video could be 2 minutes without all that measuring.

I've always wondered about how taking and doing something is different from just doing it. He says he takes and measures from the 12th fret... I'm not sure I know how to do that right. 🤪

That's 4:30 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Since when does anyone at Fender think that anyone is looking to them to build an acoustic instrument, much less a Mando?

Ouch the fit and finish on this mandolin is nasty look at those sound holes
