How to String up a MANDOLIN for Beginners 💡

This is a video showing how to string up a Mandolin's unwound (treble) and wound (Bass) strings from the tailpiece, over the bridge/saddle, nut and to the tuner posts.
After stringing the two outside strings, you can then position the bridge according to the fingerboard ie Left/Right.
At the end of the video, I quickly tune it. This isn't a tuning video but I have a dedicated (and detailed) video on tuning a mandolin, checking its action and how to get perfect intonation using an app. Setting the intonation requirements moving the bridge either backward (towards the butt) or forward (towards the nut) until you are getting the fretted 12th fret note within 5 cents on the scale note. All this more complex info is covered not in this video but the the "How to Tune a Mandolin" video.

Just realized I hadn't changed the strings, and the ones sitting on the mandolin were probably factory garbage,... There's something about layering two guitars, one standard tuning, the other in Nashville tuning and layering a mandolin over top. It's such a big open sound. Perfect for a floaty chorus! Thanks to the new strings and this video, the mandolin sounds fresher!!

I popped one of the strings as I was tuning it...would it have helped to allow more slack to the neck side before pre-winding? It doesn't appear that you did....???

@@mistyerlund8462 the strings want to rise up (like little terminators!) so sometimes it’s necessary to hold your finger in top of the tuner while you wind it all tight.

I like the new intro Beau, I know mandolins are usually used in bluegrass & country music. I remember when I was young my uncle used to play the mandolin & an acordian, Iam Italian a lot of older Italian music had mandolins, anyway thanks for bringing back some memory’s.🎼🎹🎸👨🏻‍🦯👨🏻‍🦯

I'm converting a cheapie to lefty, but back of nut to 12th fret, is halfway to the bridge?..

Yes but you also have to add what is called compensation, so move the bridge back about and extra 2mm -2/32more to start with and test the intonation with the app.

@@BeauHannamGuitars ta, I'm a little mystified by the tailpiece, tempted to flip it, (how important is that system of string relief, down that end?, assume it's to stop string breakage?).
