Fantastic Mac. This is a wealth of information. Clear cut and without any clutter.

Thanks Rishad, hopefully the upcoming videos in the Expedition Planning series will also be of use to you.

This has been what I've been searching for. Clear information coming from an experienced source. I've built out an expedition rig and I would really like to put my years as a photographer to use for a worthy cause instead of overlanding for leisure. How would you recommend that I find and connect with working expedition teams in need of a photographer with his own transportation?

The best thing to so is contact the following organisations... Explorers Connect - www.explorersconnect.com Royal Geographical Society - www.rgs.org Scientific Exploration Society - www.ses-explore.org Hope this helps.

@@DriventoExtremes Very helpful, thank you. I am still making my way through your video series and it has been immensely informative. Keep up the great work!

Very true what you say about people planning distances per day as opposed time/duration per day. Going north through West Africa (solo with a 1980's ex-military Merc truck) I had some days of 4-500km although admittedly not many. Then up in Congo Brazzaville, I had one day of 75km in 10 hours - I thought that was quite bad. But, the next day was 25km in 10 hours. Duration of driving obviously links up with amount of daylight because driving at night in many places is also a big no-no.

It's very difficult to judge actual driving times when planning an overland trip, especially through Africa, but Google Maps are a good place to start.

All very good advice, Mac. Unfortunately Google Maps doesn't always offer correct estimates in remote places so I always try to get a second opinion from locals if possible.

Thanks for your thoughts George. We’ve recently started using Maps.me for navigation as well and it’s pretty good.

Great intro video for Overlanders. We've had similar experience in Australia as George Viad has with Google maps and time to travel. They are getting better with their timings for outback travel here in Oz, but you really need to get a 2nd opinion or think about the quality of the road/track and how fast you are prepared to travel on them.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree, when on remote tracks it will be more difficult for Google to come up with an estimate, but once on the road you can compare actual with estimated driving times and adjust accordingly.

4x4 Out Far We tend to buy all our maps in advance as in many countries we’ve travelled through it’s been notoriously difficult to find maps, plus in some counties as China, very difficult to read local maps.
