Thanks for this. While it’s a small anvil this is the first video I’ve seen of an anvil actually being forced. You always hear about how anvils are forged vs cast but there are seemingly no videos of the forging process. Now I just need a video of a full size anvil being forged.

Yeah, some things there’s not much documentation on. And modern and historical methods carry widely. Thank you for watching!

7:29 your anvil looks very similar to one I just bought before Christmas 2023, one blacksmith I talked with told me my anvil was made somewhere between 1750 and 1780 . And it’s in very good condition, even with a slight belly bow across the face.

Great video. I made my way here from That Works video colab with Will. I do have a question tho. Back in the day, before power hammers, how was it possible to make an anvil without already having one? IE how did the first anvil ever made get made?
@MatthewHarrisStudio3 жыл бұрын
Right on! Awesome question. I would guess that the first iron formed from an early iron furnace bloom was probably worked out on a rock. After that I believe “stake anvils” were the most common anvil used and it all grew from there. Awesome to think back that far to the real beginnings of the Iron Age though. Great question!! 👊🏼

Do you ever plan to make a forge welded anvil like Joey Van der Steeg? I and many others would kill to see that
@MatthewHarrisStudio2 ай бұрын
No, that's not in my current plan but definitely something I've thought about. The guys did that at our hammer in in the stake anvil video.
@pdxeddie1111 Жыл бұрын
howd they do it before pressurized hammers?
@MatthewHarrisStudio Жыл бұрын
By hand with many guys and sledge hammers. Look up. “Forging the big ring “
I'm really enjoying your content. More shop noise, music in the background please, makes for a more immersive experience which is the goal I think.

It’s forged from tool steel. This one was left normalized
@alitn58811 ай бұрын
That was brilliant.. Just wondering how they forged those very big anvils?? Was it the same method as yours or different??
@MatthewHarrisStudio11 ай бұрын
Different. This was a one piece steel forging. The large ones were different blocks of wrought iron forge welded together, then a steel face was forge welded on the top for a working surface.
