just pitching in as someone who grew up by lake atitlan, living and visiting, There are specific times of the year when cyanobacteria blooms, usually in Jan-Feb, but unless its a really bad year, most of the lake should be ok to swim in!! Many lakefront ariBNBs have docks themselves, so yes bring a swimsuit and yes try to swim. one of my fav parts os being at the lake is always swimming so dont miss out. The san marcos nature reserve opened when i was a kid and is right near my home base, and i frequent it! there is a small fee but totally worth it and the diving off the platform is an AMAZING experience (if you are up for it!)) other notes on video - bring sunscreen whenever you go! not just dry season. - prices are higher in those two loctions than in most other places, because they are so tourist friendly -july-august ususally has a few weeks of dryer climate amid the wet season, and in my opinion that is when it is the most beautiful here. everything is green and lush but still pretty. if it does trin it will be at light, but bring a lightweight jacket or poncho. - tap water - not drinkable. however it is really common for places to have water filtered through an ecofiltro or water refil stations with agua salvavidas, so please do still bring your reusable bottle! cut down on plastic waste as much as you can, it is already something this country struggles with - many places dont have the sweage to flush toilet paper, there will be a trash can, so make sure you are tossing it all there instead of in the toilet :))) other locations i would reccomend visiting as a tourist: - tikal, peten in general for archeological sites! there are buses that go up from guatemala city, just note the bus station can be a bit sketchy. - hike volcan pacaya! active volcano hike!! - semuc champey - monterrico/paredon if you want to see the black sand beaches! (not as tourist oriented though!) enjoy your trip!!!

Do you think you could do this type of video for your biggest or favorite trips this year? I know doing it for each one could be a lot but this was so helpful!

So glad you find them helpful!! I don’t think I can do it for every destination but I will try to do it for the places that I feel like are harder to plan!!

I loooove Guatemala! I went in March the last time and the whole Antigua area was smoky and hazy because of burning season. It was also very hot (but apparently not as hot as april and may) which, combined with the altitude, made it not so comfortable for our group, who is used to living at sea level. I've also been in December and January. December was my favourite because we got to enjoy the buildup to Christmas and the weather was perfect but there weren't nearly as many tourists as the other times we visited.

Thanks for all the info. We’re going tomorrow and I am so glad I watched this because we’re staying with a humanitarian group on Lake Atitlan and going to Antiqua next week. All our accommodations and meals are already taken care of but the weather and money and other info is super useful:)

Hi @Worldwide Wu, I have booked a flight to Guatemala and wanted to get a gauge on how much acatenango trips cost. If you do t mind me asking, how much did it cost? Also, in Antigua, you mentioned a jade museum. Do you know if they do custom? Greatly appreciate any advice you can give :)
@WorldwideWu7 ай бұрын
Hi I didn’t climb Acatenango but the tour company I linked in the description box offers them! Highly recommend checking that out for pricing. And I’m not sure if they do custom jade pieces.. so sorry!

Travelling within Guatemala: Why not Option 3 for the local transport - the busses. They are slower of course, but cost much less than the shuttle or private car options. Even if eventually many people don't like it, because many tourists meanwhile are luxury travellers, the real backpackers still stick to the local transport system and save a lot of manoey for transport. Everyone has a differnt style to travel, isn't it?

Are there any exchange currency store or banks that will exchange us dollers for Guatemalan currency?
@TTTTania6 ай бұрын
Hello! I'm from Guatemala and you can go to any Banrural (the name of the bank- it's everywhere, very easy to find) and they'll exchange USD to Q but only $50 and $100 bills are accepted and they must be in good condition ($20 and under are not accepted but I don't know why) That's where I go, I think others banks do it too but I like Banrural 😅

@@TTTTania thank you so much
@nomansland51135 ай бұрын
In Antigua and Panajachel, and other main tourist destinations, you can probably get by with dollars and or credit cards. But yeah, Banrural is solid for exchange
