You've inspired me to get into the kitchen this afternoon! You must use a lot of yeast, baking everyday. I buy 500g packs for $4-5. Works just fine. Looks like gilmours has it, Moore Wilson's in Welly etc. Keeps in freezer forever.

Yeah you can definitely get cheaper yeast to what I use, only problem I have is that it tends to take longer to rise, and when I'm almost making a loaf a day I don't have the patience for it haha ... still works out cheaper than buying the bread though 🙂

Hey there. I took the time a long while ago to type up a grocery list on my computer of most things that I get in my usual shop. I then print it off and cross out what I don't need. It really helps to make sure you get everything you need and you don't need to go back to the supermarket. I will attach a photo in the Facebook group of half of my list so you can see it.

In Auckland, Chinese supermarkets are MUCH cheaper for produce, generally. At least, they were about 2 years ago when I lived there. Ingredients is the best way to keep prices down for equivalent items, but really the big thing is buy cheaper alternatives. Fort example, peanuts, not almonds or cashews. Especially, more beans, lentils and pulses and less meat. Much more rice, pasta, bread and vegetable oil... Fruit send expensive but $3 per kg for apples is a heck of a lot of nutrition for the price!

Yeah I've heard Chinese and Indian grocers are often cheaper for certain things. Good valid points thanks for the comment!

Can I use bough plain fat free yoghurt as a starter . If so do I use powder milk as the liquid. I have an easy yo yoghurt msker
@CheaperWaysNZ2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I'm not sure how easy yo makers works, but doing it my way in the slowcooker you can use the bought plain yoghurt as a started (sometimes I do that if I'm a bit slack and mine goes off before I make more!). You can either use normal standard milk or milk made from milk powder (just the powdered is cheaper). I have heard of people who use an easy yo using half a packet of the easy yo yoghurt mixture and an equal amount of milk powder to make it go further.
@krisnhailsatley76172 жыл бұрын
How do you keep your yoghurt running? I find that ours goes a bit yuck after a few rounds. What did you use as your original starter?
@CheaperWaysNZ2 жыл бұрын
Oh that's weird - I just use the Yoplait Natural Greek Style yoghurt if I have to buy it (which I do occasionally if mine goes off before I've made more!), I find that's the best to make more with, but otherwise I just continue indefinitely with my previous batch. Sometimes mine goes a bit too "tangy" if I use a bit too much of the starter.

@@CheaperWaysNZ Ok thanks. I'll give that one a go

Have you done the calculation for the entire cost of baked bread? I'm skeptical that flour and milk powder are more cost effective. How much is fresh milk on the farmers' market? Here it is 0.80 to 1.00 euros (1.4-1.8 NZD). I've an old bias against ovens because I was raised in a home with propane gas. Turning on a 1 kW electric oven required all lights and TV to be off. Tomato is most cost effective in paste form. Milk and wheat groats make quick porridge without the manual labor of bread dough. Shops get away with paying way less for electricity for baking and reducing. They don't do "specials". I think people would just wait until the meat goes for sale, and don't buy any meat at other times. Who would even think of throwing out leftovers or end pieces of bread. The end pieces can take harder spreading without falling apart. They don't harden as much if kept in a plastic bag.
@CheaperWaysNZ4 ай бұрын
So with ingredients here a simple loaf of bread costs $1.03 to make ingredient-wise, add another 60 cents for cooking in the oven. The very cheapest bread we can buy is $1.30, which is slightly cheaper but it's not very good bread at all ... to buy a decent loaf is more in the $3-$4 range at the moment, so for us it's cheaper to make it. With milk, it costs $11.30 for enough powder to make 10 litres, so $1.13 per litre. At the moment the cheapest to buy in a bottle is $1.90 per litre. It's amazing how many people do throw leftovers and bread ends out, but I think these days as costs are rising everyone's looking for way of using things instead of throwing them out!
@j7ndominica0514 ай бұрын
I see. Thanks for the breakdown. Fresh bread is definitely better than from supermarket, even the most basic, and you can use more rich ingreadients, milk and butter.
@growtocycle69922 жыл бұрын
Most important. Life is short. Try new things, enjoy food and it's ok to splurge on nice things sometimes. The generic version is almost always equally as good, but go ahead and buy yummy Brazil nuts or whatever you fancy every so often
