I don't like the slug shape and prefer to use loaf tins so the toaster can handle the slices. We are only a family of two though, no kids now so no sandwiches to make. I make four loaves at a time using my "Dave" and freeze them. Also, I have found that it is not necessary to use a whole packet of the Edmonds Instant dried yeast but just half will do the job. Thats the yeast I prefer anyway.

Ive just started regularly making your no knead bread recipe have to say its the absolute best recipe yet, everyone is loving the 'slug' loaf! Couple of things i have found is the more time i give it to rise both times the better and the less handling the better as well. Ive tried a few yeast varieties so far my go to's are the edmonds surebake (floury 1) and the edmonds sachets. My go to for flour for all my baking is the 5kg high grade edmonds purely because of the size and price 11$ which means i have baking staples at the ready any time i need it 😊

Great video, thank you. I'm still learning every day with bread making. One thing I don't like about some of the recipes I've tried is that the yeast flavour comes through more than I'd like. I'm not a natural in the kitchen so everything gets measured/weighed meticulously, so it's definitely the recipes.
@CheaperWaysNZ

I wonder if you experiment by just reducing the amount of yeast a bit? The original recipe I used called for a tablespoon, but I find a slightly smaller dessert spoon works just as well, and I've heard some people even use a bit less so could be worth a play!

Personally I always use Edmonds dry east in sachets. I found over the years that works best for me. It stays good in sachets which I can not say for once that are loose .That is if you don' bake every day. One thing I find pitty is that it is so ahrd to find fresh yeast which is commonly used in Europe .I di find some in Gilmours but you had to buy Ikg block! Thank you for sharing. Cheers

Yep so very similar to what I did, just that I add the flour into the liquids so I only need one bowl 😀👍 I think adding some bread improver would help with the other two yeasts that didn't already have it added maybe.

Have you ever made sourdough starter. I had been trying for 5 wks, but couldn't get it to double 3 days in a row, or sometimes it took longer than it should. Have been seeing so many posts about mould and pink spots, and became so paranoid that I thought I saw mould in mine and threw it away this morning, so I think I'll probably stick to this yeast instead 😢😢😢.

I'm in the same boat! On one of my attempts I managed to get the sourdough starter looking good and it kind of worked but problem was the bread took so long to rise I'm not sure I'm organised enough to be making my bread that far in advance lol. Another time I killed it ... another time I dropped the jar and it smashed ... I've just accepted my fate as a dried yeast user for the timebeing 😂

If you're going hydro... Stay away from all the liquid nutrients..... 1.. you need a pH meter.. cheap one will due 2... You need pH down... pH up... 3. all purpose 10-10-10. And 2-10-10... granular But dissolve in water before you add to your plant water... don't add the undissolved granules into plant water Add a pinch of 10-10-10 until it fruits ..then switch to 2-10-10... Add a pinch every second time you add new water... Keep your water pH to 6.0 - 7.0 Keep your water level just touching the net pot ..keep your lights about 24 inches to the plant... Temps 72-80 degrees.. humidity 50--62... Water TDS around 500 and ur good .. if you don't keep your water ph'd between 6 and 7.0 the plant most likely won't grow ... but it will live Some soils like compost have the ability to turn high pH to neutral... But for Hydro you must pH down... Or the plant will starve due to nutrient lock out Also add a bubbler or air stone inside the pot so roots won't suffocate and water won't be stagnant... You need an air gap ..roots will grow down into water

this is not a nutrient or bug isue i also think your problem is in the root zone i doubt oxygen is lacking that much, but a normal airpump for a fishtank would solve that.. are the temps stable, hydrophonic is not forgiving when it comes to temps. and it looks like the plants was doing great, no discolering or anything it looks like it was something that came pretty fast soil is the solution if you dont have a stable environment

My roosters leg were a bit red, as well as having a bad case of scaly leg mites, so I mixed up vaseline with zinc and caster oil cream (could just use caster oil on its own) the zinc soothes the redness and suffocates the mites along with the Vaseline. My roosters legs are looking so much better. I'll keep applying it till they are 100%.

So I guess the whole idea behind this is so you can grow tomatoes over winter. I got a greenhouse I just sorta spent more time fixing the greenhouse and the panels flying off than actually gardining so the tomato plants went haywire. I got some tomatoes though just waiting for them to change colour. So if you grow tomatoes over winter isn't the power bill going to be horrendous?
@CheaperWaysNZ
@CheaperWaysNZ 7 күн бұрын
The way we have it set up, the heat pump (which my husband restored from a broken one as he's in the trade) hardly uses any power as it's such a well insulated room and the grow lights hardly use any power as well, so we haven't seen any difference in power use since having it all switched on over the last winter 🙂

Kratky style! If you don't want to abandon your setup entirely, switch from tomatoes to leafy greens, which don't need e.g. staking and careful adjustments. I seriously got into this during covid lockdown, growing cabbages which I turned into kimchi. This was in a small one-bedroom flat, so it stayed "warm enough" all year long. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of all my stuff when I moved into a smaller place. If there's one thing I'd love to try is hydroponic _wasabi_ in buckets ("space buckets"). If I had enough room, it might even lead to some cash ($400 per kilo, I hear!). Even a bowl of the leaves will set you back a heap of cash at a restaurant.
@CheaperWaysNZ

I've always found the trough (as in what looks like roof spouting) set up works better for hydro tomatoes and other fruit and veges planted in perlite with the nutrients running underneath them which feeds the root system, getting the nutrient balance right can be tricky
